Charles Wesley Smith, an 83-year-old resident of Princeton and Alamo, TX, died on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Liberty Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 1p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton with Pastor David Dennis officiating. Burial will follow in the Princeton Cemetery with military honors provided by Memorial VFW Post #7159 of Princeton.
Mr. Smith was born on April 10, 1931 near Ravanna, the son of Joseph Laird and Nellie Leo Orndorff Smith. He grew up on the family farm near Ravanna and was a 1950 graduate of Ravanna High School. He also attended Truman State University in Kirksville. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He was married on Aug. 13, 1955 to Betty Jean Jones, who survives of the home.
Mr. Smith spent most of his working career as a long haul truck driver and farmer. He enjoyed playing cards and games of all types. He was a member of the American Legion, the Princeton Country Club, the Princeton First Christian Church, and later attended the Princeton First Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Denise Smith and her husband, Clyde of Macon; a son, Gregory Smith and his wife, Christy of Sevierville, TN; a grandson, Christopher Boyer and his wife, Michelle of Gorin; a granddaughter, Amanda Hall and her husband, Benjamin of Elkhorn, NE; three step-grandchildren, Andrea Wood and her husband, Jared, Kristen McClarren and her husband, Michael, all of Columbia and Craig Smith of Macon; a great-grandson, Wesley Blaise Boyer, of Gorin; one brother, John L. Smith and his wife, Marie of Stewartsville; one sister, Jane Craig and her husband, Wilbur of Windsor, CO; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Nowlin and her husband, Ed of Columbia; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Anna and Sharon Smith, who died in infancy, and Mary Watkins; and by a brother-in-law, Troy Watkins.
The family requests memorial contributions to either the Truman State University Foundation Smith-Jones-Nowlin Family Scholarship or to the American Heart Association. Contributions may be mailed to the funeral home at PO Box 316, Princeton, MO 64673.
