Sybil C. Cowell, an 89-year-old resident of Galt, died on Wednesday evening July 16, 2014 at Eastview Manor Care Center, in Trenton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the Galt Christian Church with Rev. Stan Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Galt West Cemetery.
The body is at the Slater Funeral Home in Trenton and there is no scheduled family visitation.
Ms. Cowell was born on Feb. 12, 1925 in Kirksville, the daughter of Paul Raymond and Alta Floe Owings Whittom. She graduated from Kirksville High School and also Kirksville State Teachers College with a bachelor’s degree, then she graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a master’s degree in learning disabilities. She was a school teacher in Galt, Humphreys, Keytesville and Moulton, IA. She also worked as a dietitian for Kirksville Hospital and Northeast Missouri State University. She was a member of Galt Christian Church in Galt and the retired teachers association.
Her survivors include one son, Ronald Cowell and his wife, Ginny of Fulton; two grandsons, William Cowell of Concordia and Jon Cowell of Ft. Leonard Wood; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father parents; one sister, Margaret Gorley; and one brother, Raymond Paul Whittom.
Memorials are suggested to the Galt West Cemetery and may be left at the funeral home.
