Finance Committee Will Look At Ways To Save Money

Jul 17, 2014 | Headline News

The Finance Committee of the Trenton City Council met on Thursday, discussing various scenarios involving the city’s financial condition.
City Administrator Kerry Sampson said that department heads are being asked to make a list of possible ways to eliminate unnecessary expenditures while also coming up with ways where additional revenues might be realized. He noted the city could face as much as a $186,000 loss in tax revenues if a tax cut bill vetoed by Gov. Jay Nixon is overridden by the legislature in September. He said he wants the city to be ready in case the cuts become a reality.
All staff will also be asked to look at ways in which the city “might do business better” as another way of reducing expenditures. Sampson said this would include discussion of cross-training as well as whether or not to replace someone when an employee leaves or retires. He said all areas of city operations, including utilities, will be examined.
The Finance Committee also began discussions on employee health insurance for next year and plans to have three options available for the council to consider as part of the budget process.
Three of the four committee members – Larry Huffstutter, Mark Moore and Travis Elbert – were present for the meeting along with councilmen Mark Robinson and Kenneth Ewing. Allan Quilty, a committee member, was absent.
