Medical Mission Is Rotary Topic

May 30, 2014 | Clubs & Organizations, Meetings

Dr. Rolfe McCoy of Chillicothe was the guest speaker at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Hilbert Holeman was the program chairman.
Dr. McCoy and his wife, Julie, both members of the Chillicothe Rotary Club, returned in February from a medical/dental mission to Jamaica. There were 56 individuals, including 11 Rotarians, who were a part of the mission, which is sponsored by the North Kansas City Rotary Club and organized by Robert McGee, a former Trenton resident. The group spent time at four clinics in north Jamaica as well as a fifth day doing health screenings at a local school. The group saw 1,929 patients, including 508 who had some type of dental work done. Around $100,000 in medication was dispensed during the trip, much of which was either donated or purchased with funds provided by Rotary International. The group paid its own travel and living expenses.
This year’s trip was in memory of Dr. Dean Werner, who had been a part of the mission team for several years but who has since passed away. Two of his daughters were on the trip and they brought with them Dr. Warner’s wheelchair, which was donated to a Jamaican resident who is suffering from Cerebral Palsy. A scooter was also taken to provide transportation for another resident who was missing both legs.
Next week’s program will be an update on the Thompson House project by Gary and Ellen Dolan. Don Woodard is the program chairman.
