Editor’s Note: The following information is provided by Trenton R-9 Superintendent Becky Albrecht regarding a reading program being implemented by the district and piloted during summer school this year.
Trenton R-9 is thrilled to announce that students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade will have open access to the world’s largest enhanced digital library through participation in the myON Reader program. myON has over 5,000 titles from over 26 publishers. A wide variety of titles appeal to different interests and reading abilities. Approximately, 70 percent of titles are nonfiction and 10 percent of titles are Spanish.
When students first log into myON through their own personal account, they take an interest inventory and short reading placement test. Most R-9 students will do this at school prior to the end of the school year. Based on results, myON is able to match students with age and developmentally appropriate books that appeal to student’s individual interests. The program also tracks the time the student spends reading, total number of pages read, and books read.
As a digital library, kids can access myON and their personal free account anywhere, anytime on desk top computers, laptop computers, tablets, and mobile devices. After a book is downloaded onto the device from an Internet connection, it can be accessed without wi-fi or internet connection. myON is a part of the 2014 summer school curriculum, but can also be used by students who opt not to attend summer school.
