During Monday night’s council meeting City of Trenton Code Enforcement Officer Donnie Vandevender discussed the need for public awareness regarding solicitation of repair services that have been taking place in Trenton following this weekend’s storm. He issued the following information that he feels “would be vital for the local citizens” as they make any needed repairs:
• All contractors doing any work inside the city of Trenton are required to be licensed. The city will waive a solicitation license if an occupational license is purchased. Ask for proof of licensing and insurance before contractors quote or work on your property. It was suggested that persons work with their insurance company to get a list of licensed contractors.
• All work is required to be installed to all municipal-adopted ordinances and codes, i.e. the 2006 International Residential and Building Code.
• As to code, no more than two layers of any type of roofing materials are acceptable. Cedar shingles are not an approved sub-structure for application of composition shingles or other roofing. Composition shingles are required to be applied to solid sheeting.
• Permits are not required to replace roofing or other minor storm damage repairs, i.e. replacement of windows, exterior doors, siding, guttering, etc. Any tornado or major wind storms that result in structure damages do require building permits.
Trenton Police Chief Tommy Wright also offers a few suggestions regarding the use of out-of-town contractors in the column, “City Chat,” which appears on page 7 of today’s Republican-Times.
