Police Chief Issues Caution Following Storm

May 12, 2014 | Newspaper Column

by Trenton Police Chief Tommy Wright
Storm season is upon us! With this storm season comes damage to our homes, property and businesses. That damage brings out both legitimate contractors as well as unsavory contractors.
Here are some suggestions to avoid getting ripped off by unsavory roofers, tree trimmers and contractors:
1. Always call your Insurance Agent before any work is done!
2. Avoid Door to Door contractors. Although they may be legitimate ask your insurance agent for a list of contractors that they would recommend.
3. NEVER pay up front or pay the amount in full before the work begins.
4. Use local businesses with local business licenses whenever possible.
5. If you are in the City of Trenton, ask any door to door sales people to see their City Solicitation and Business license/Insurance.
6. Always get more than one estimates from multiple contractors before getting any work on your home.
7. Ask contractors for references and then verify their work by contacting these references.
8. Research their company and insist on a company with a good reputation. Ask for the company’s business address, phone number, and email address. Contact the company’s home office and make inquiries about the contractor(s) at your home.
9. Be cautious about scare tactics that can be used by unsavory contractors.
10. When in doubt, call the police. A deal that sounds too good to be true, probably is! Be cautious of bids that seem extremely low and contractors who demand payment before the work is done.
