Trenton Teams Measure Up Against District Foes In St. Joe

May 9, 2014 | Sports & Recreation, Track

The Trenton High School track and field teams traveled to St. Joseph Thursday for the Lafayette Relays. In a meet that featured several of the Bulldogs’ Class 3, District 8 opponents, the Trenton boys finished fifth out of 11 teams with 40 points. The Lady Bulldogs placed sixth out of 11, despite scoring 55 team points.
The meet was cut short due to inclement weather leaving the boys 200-meter dash and both 3,200-meter runs and 4×400-meter relays incomplete.
Bulldogs
Charlie Hoffman had a tremendous day to lead Trenton, taking gold in both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Hoffman took first in the 800 with a time of 2:01.96 and broke the tape in the 1,600 with a time of 4:49. The two gold-medal performances accounted for half of Trenton’s points at the meet.
Hoffman was also a part of the 4×800-meter relay team which finished fourth with a time of 9:10.79. Thomas Mack, Wynne DeVorss and Trent Crawford joined Hoffman in the fourth-place effort. The 4×200-meter relay team of Dakota Anderson, Jonathan Lamp, Travis Leeper and Clinton Brenner also placed fourth, crossing the line with a time of 1:36.66.
Dalton Ellis landed the Bulldogs some points, finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.09 and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.96.
Other placewinners for the Bulldogs included Trey Shields, fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.15; Brenner, fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-4; and DeVorss, sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.56.
“There was a lot of really good competition at the meet,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Wes Croy said. “A lot of the same teams we will see at districts were there. It gave us a great idea of where we are at and there is no question we need to improve in some areas if we expect to get past districts, but we have other areas where we are running really well right now.
“Charlie Hoffman ran his best 800 of the year and he is doing well in the mile. Dalton Ellis ran really well in the 300-meter hurdles, so we do have some guys who seem to be peaking at the right time. Hopefully, we clean up some of the things we need to this week and are ready to go next Saturday at districts.”
Lady Bulldogs
The Trenton girls scored three first-place medals as Tenna Roberts, Ayron Osborn and Ally Ockenfels each won an individual event. Roberts won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.36, Osborn won the triple jump with a mark of 33-8 and Ockenfels won the shot put with a throw of 34-4.5. Osborn also added a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:42.99.
Behind the three gold medals, Karley McCollum added a third-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 4-8 and Alexis Fender was third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.56. Fender also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.06. Whitley Richman was right behind Fender in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing fifth with a time of 17.09.
Trenton placed in two of the three relays contested. The 4×200-meter team of Fender, Roberts, Osborn and Lana Raymo was fifth with a time of 1:55.15 and the 4×800-meter relay team of Lexie Tolson, Abby Miller, Jaylen Neff and Karli Crawford was sixth with a time of 12:25.31.
“Ally, Ayron and Tenna all got first in their events,” Lady Bulldogs’ Coach Chris Parks said. “With the conditions we had and the district competition that was there, that was a good sign. Alexis and Whitley Richman are both running well in both of the hurdle events right now, too. We had a lot of personal bests in a lot of areas, so overall, I was really pleased with our performance.”
Trenton has one final tune-up before districts, traveling to St. Joseph on Tuesday for the Benton Relays.
