Identity Theft Is Rotary Topic

May 9, 2014 | Clubs & Organizations

Trenton banker and Rotary Club member Rick Klinginsmith presented an program on identity theft during Thursday’s Rotary meeting, including things a person can do, and should not do. Scott Forman was the program chairman.
Identity theft is a form of stealing someone’s personal information usually in an attempt to gain access to financial resources, or obtain credit, in that person’s name. The victim then often suffers adverse consequences if they are held responsible for the perpetrators’ fraudulent actions. Personal information includes their name, social security number, personal identification number or PIN, banking and credit or debit card accounts. Klinginsmith indicated persons should only release personally identifiable information if you have initiated the contact especially if it’s during a phone call.
Klinginsmith cautioned persons to review their monthly bank statements to make sure there are no unauthorized deposits or withdrawals; to keep bank statements in a safe place at home where thieves won’t be looking. He suggested persons not carry their Social Security and/or Medicare card in their wallet as it’s often a target for theft. He also suggested not putting a PIN number in a checkbook.
Klinginsmith said persons should review their credit report said a website (annualcreditreport.com) provides identity theft information.
Klinginsmith also offered to Rotarians some examples of scams concluding with “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
During the business portion, Elizabeth Gibson discussed “Every Rotarian, Every Year.” Five dollars of each members’ monthly dues goes to the Rotary Foundation. Ms. Gibson then requested each member contribute another 40 dollars during the year in order to have a $100 contribution in their name to the foundation.
Steve Taylor reported the Missouri Day parade committee will meet at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13 o’clock at Preferred Family. Additional committee members are being sought.
Matt Osterthun announced the Charles Holmes Memorial Rotary Club scholarship worth $350 was presented to Charlie Hoffman during the Trenton High School Awards ceremony.
