Brad Scott, general manager of the North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission, presented the program at Thursday’s Trenton Rotary Club meeting. Duane Urich was the program chairman.
Scott has been working with the commission, made up of the cities of Milan, Green City and Green Castle as well as the Sullivan County Public Water District #1, to develop a lake that will provide water for residents in a 10-county area. Citizens of Sullivan County approved a one-half cent sales tax, which along with a $1 increase in water rates, is helping to fund a $10 million bond that is being used to purchase the property needed to construct the lake. Approximately 3,330 acres of the 4,300 acres needed to the lake have been purchased and offers have been made to all property owners within the designated lake area.
The lake, according to Scott, is two times the size of Lake Thunderhead in Putnam County and is also larger than the Long Branch Lake at Macon. It is anticipated to be able to serve 50,000 water customers in the area.
The Natural Resource Conservation Service is sponsoring the project and will build the lake once the land is acquired. Scott said he has been working with the Department of Natural Resources and the EPA on environmental concerns and legislative bill passed in 2011 gives the commission the authority over all contamination issues.
During the business meeting, it was announced that District Governor Rick Simon would make his official club visit on May 22.
Next week’s program chairman is Scott Forman. Rick Klinginsmith will talk about electronic identity theft.
