Trenton Holds Its Own With Big Schools

Apr 4, 2014 | Golf, Sports & Recreation

The Trenton High School boys’ golf team got its season under way on Thursday on a soggy day at Tiffany Greens in Kansas City. The Bulldogs held their own in a field of much larger schools at the Park Hill High School Darren Floyd Memorial Tournament, placing seventh in a field of 18 with a team score of 352.
Trenton was paced by Chase Tolson, a returning state qualifier, who shot a 79. The mark was good for a medal at the tournament as it placed Tolson in a tie for ninth overall. He finished 10th after a card playoff. Tolson arrived at his final total after shooting nine-hole totals of 38 and 41.
Lane Beverlin finished with Trenton’s second-lowest total, shooting an 87. Beverlin carded a 41 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine.
Behind the lead two, Trenton had a trio of scores in the 90’s. Nate Swann had a 91 with nine-hole splits of 45 and 46, Corbyn Guile had a 95 after nine-hole scores of 48 and 47 and Cree Mullenix finished with a 99 after nine-hole marks of 50 and 49.
“It was a wet day,” Bulldogs’ Coach Travis Mullenix said. “They had two and a half inches of rain prior to the tournament. But, the rain stopped and under cloudy skies the boys were able to play 18 holes. Chase had a real good day and medaled, finishing 10th overall. It was nice to see him start off the season playing well in a big tournament. I was also happy with the two freshmen, Corbyn Guile and Nate Swann. There are a lot of big schools in this tourney and it can be a little overwhelming at first. They handled the pressure very well in their first varsity action of their careers. It’s a tough course and they both finished with very respectable scores as freshmen.”
Lee’s Summit West took home the team title, shooting a score of 302. Lee’s Summit North was second with a 325 and Kearney rounded out the top three, shooting a 333. Blue Springs (340), Park Hill (347) and Liberty North (350) placed fourth through sixth, right ahead of the Bulldogs.
The Trenton golfers will kick off the dual portion of their schedule on Monday, playing host to Putnam County at the Riverside Country Club in Trenton. The Bulldogs and Midgets are set for a 4 p.m. tee time.
