Lady Hawks Come Up Short In Title Game

Feb 28, 2014 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

The Gilman City girls’ bid for a district championship came up just short on Thursday night. The Lady Hawks fell 46-39 to Linn County in the finals of the Class 1, District 11 Tournament in Galt.
Gilman City played well for the first three quarters, putting themselves in position to capture the program’s first district title since 2008. But things went awry in the fourth quarter. Linn County grabbed control of the game and sent the Lady Hawks home as district runners-up.
“The girls played hard,” Lady Hawks’ Head Coach Jacob Shipman said. “We did everything that we needed to do to win the first three quarters. We struggled being patient on offense in the fourth quarter, panicked and took some tough shots. The last four minutes were tough for us mentally and is something that we will improve on with more experience. Hats off to Linn County. They played a great game and are a very tough team.”
Gilman City was paced by Mikayla Toombs, who had 12 points, and Darriane Carey, who scored nine.
The Lady Hawks finished the season with a 16-10 record. Gilman City will return its entire team next season as none of the current Lady Hawks are seniors.
