For the second time in as many games, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs squared off with the Hamilton Lady Hornets on the basketball court. Much like the first meeting, Trenton came away with a low-scoring win, but this time there was more on the line as Hamilton’s season ended with a 41-36 Trenton victory on Monday.
Trenton prevailed in the Class 3, District 16 match-up at Lathrop High School largely thanks to their defense. Hamilton cracked double digits only in the first and fourth quarters and did so just barely, putting up 10 points in the first and 13 in the fourth. The Lady Hornets netted just nine points in the second quarter and a game-low four in the third.
Even with Trenton’s defense keeping Hamilton’s scoring to a minimum, things looked bad for the Lady Bulldogs for a while. Trenton trailed by three points after the opening eight minutes and found themselves down 19-11 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs finally got the offense going to compliment their defense in the second half, going on a 13-4 run in the third quarter to take a 24-23 lead into the final frame. Trenton piled up 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the five-point win.
“That was a tough, physical, hard-fought game,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Brian Upton said. “I was very proud of how we responded as a team in the second half. Baskets were hard to come by in the first half and we executed much better in the second half, both offensively and defensively.”
Trenton was led by Cassidy Cotton, who scored 11 points, all in the second half. Whitley Richman added 10 points and five rebounds and Makaila Capeder finished with seven points, 14 rebounds and three assists. Madi Trump netted seven points, all of which came in the second half. Trump also totaled six rebounds and four assists. McKinley Hurley gave the Lady Bulldogs four points and four assists and Lexi Tolson scored two points.
“Cass and Madi were great in the second half, scoring all of their points and hitting big buckets,” Upton said. “Makaila played well the whole game. Defensively she worked so hard and she really controlled the glass. McKinley played excellent and Whitley hit some big shots.”
With the win, Trenton moved to 19-7 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs will look to pick up win number 20 on Wednesday, but it won’t be easy as Trenton matches up with top-seeded Cameron. Cameron defeated the Lady Bulldogs last Tuesday, 54-41. Trenton and Cameron will tip off on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Lathrop.
