Several area teams moved Tuesday action up to Monday night to avoid potential weather issues. Mercer, Princeton, Grundy R-5 and Gilman City all saw action, battling it out in conference match-ups.
Mercer Girls 60
Winston Girls 48
The Mercer girls put it on Winston, jumping out to a 25-7 lead in the first quarter and never looking back. Winston trimmed two points off the lead in the second quarter, but Mercer padded the lead with a 17-11 run in the third quarter that gave the Lady Cardinals a commanding 54-32 lead entering the final frame. Winston made a run in the fourth quarter, but came nowhere near overtaking Mercer as the Lady Cardinals cruised to the win.
Bailey Owens scored 33 points to lead the Lady Cardinals, who also got 16 points from Lindsay Wyatt, six from Nicole Kost, three from Breanna Main and two from Emily Sample.
The win improved the Lady Cardinals to 18-1 on the year.
Winston Boys 65
Mercer Boys 48
The Mercer boys found themselves in a big hole early, falling behind Winston 17-8 in the first quarter. Mercer made a run in the third quarter, outscoring Winston 16-7, but couldn’t close the gap anymore as the Redbirds held on in the final frame for the win.
Cashman Hartley led Mercer with 17 points while Grant Widner scored nine points and Galt Porter added seven.
With the loss, Mercer fell to 9-10 on the season.
Gilman City Girls 55
Grundy R-5 Girls 37
The Gilman City girls picked up a conference win, dispatching the Lady Panthers. Gilman led throughout the contest, pulling away slowly. The Lady Hawks led by 12 points entering the final quarter of play and outscored Grundy 23-17 over the last eight minutes to push the game out of reach.
Gilman City was paced by Mikayla Toombs, who scored 18 points and Hailey Burrows added 11. For Grundy it was Mckenna Owens showing the way with 11 points and nine rebounds while Matana Munday finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Emily Milazzo scored eight points and had three assists and Elizabeth Novak had seven points, eight rebounds and four steals.
The win moved Gilman City to 11-7 while the Lady Panthers dropped to 3-14
Grundy R-5 Boys 58
Gilman City Boys 18
The Grundy R-5 boys ran away with the boys match-up giving the two schools a split on the night. The Panthers jumped ahead 22-3 in the opening quarter of play and never looked back en route to the lopsided win.
Cade Mullenix led the Panthers with 15 points and seven steals and Seth Riddle scored eight points. Isaac Chamberlin added eight points as well and Destin Gann had seven points and nine rebounds. Mason Larson pulled down 12 rebounds for the Panthers. For Gilman City, Dylan Sievering scored 15 points.
The win moved the Grundy boys to 13-6 while the Hawks fell to 0-16.
Stanberry Girls 40
Princeton Girls 24
The Princeton girls kept things close with Stanberry early on, trailing 10-9 after the first quarter and 16-11 at halftime. Stanberry began to pull away in the second half, however, taking the game by 16 points.
Paige Phillips had seven points to lead the Lady Tigers and Trinity Kile finished with six. Rebecca Phillips added five points and Maddie Enright scored four. Sierra Dinsmore rounded out the Lady Tigers’ total with two points.
With the loss, Princeton fell to 6-12 overall.
Stanberry Boys 66
Princeton Boys 44
The Princeton boys were unable to upend Stanberry. Princeton fell behind 16-9 in the first quarter and never recovered. Stanberry added four points to the lead in the second quarter and then put the game away in the fourth with a 19-8 run.
Princeton was led by Brant Faulkner who scored 11 points. Steffan Elliott and Adam Millburn each scored eight points and Hunter Boxley had six. Princeton also got four points from Jason McLain and Drew Cox and two points from Justin hamilton and Jordan Adams.
With the loss, Princeton fell to 12-7 on the season.
