Trenton native Andy Hill, back row, center, was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies held on Sunday evening in Springfield. Hill is the associate head coach and quarterbacks coach for the University of Missouri Tigers football team. Missouri Tigers Associate Head Football Coach Andy Hill was enshrined into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday night during ceremonies at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield.
Hill, a 1980 graduate of Trenton High School, was a football standout for the Bulldogs. The Trenton native remains the third-leading receiver in Trenton High School history with 838 career yards to this day. His 22 total touchdowns in 1979 still ranks as the third-highest in school history and his 54 career receptions is fourth on the school’s all-time list.
After graduation from Trenton, Hill walked on at the University of Missouri, where he eventually earned a scholarship. He lettered in 1980, ’81, ’83 and ’84 and played on Missouri teams that earned trips to the Liberty, Tangerine and Holiday bowls. Hill caught 51 passes for 946 yards and scored seven touchdowns in his career at Mizzou. As a senior, he caught 25 passes for 445 yards and three scores.
Hill made the move from playing to coaching at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, where he was a graduate assistant coach. Hill then went to Hutchinson Community College, where he was the offensive coordinator in 1992 and 1993 before being promoted to the school’s head coaching position. He joined the Missouri Tigers in 1996 and is currently the longest tenured coach on the Tigers’ staff.
Hill was enshrined in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame class of 2014 along with Bob Kendrick, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum President; Willie McGee, former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder; Ed Podolak, former Kansas City Chiefs running back; Mike McFarlane, former Kansas City Royals catcher; Luke Snyder, Raymore native and professional bull rider; Gary Link, Missouri Tigers color commentator and former Tigers basketball player; Patty Viverito, Missouri Valley Conference senior associate commissioner; Jason Pyrah, two-time Olympic runner; Jack Steck, Drury and Missouri State swimming coach; Becky Oakes, director of sports for the National Federation of State High School Associations; Mark Adams, Missouri team physician; Tom Smith, former Missouri Western men’s basketball coach; Warren Turner, Missouri Southern baseball coach; Robert Penn, Brentwood High School football coach; Springfield Hillcrest and American Legion baseball programs; and the Parkway West swimming program.
