Trenton Wrestlers Grab Fifth At Plattsburg

Jan 20, 2014 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

The Trenton Bulldogs wrestling team was in Plattsburg on Saturday at the Plattsburg Wrestling Tournament. Trenton came away with a fifth-place finish in a field of 17 teams.
Once again Mason Mounce picked up a tournament championship at 170 pounds. His win in the championship match was his 100th win for his career. After receiving a bye in the first round, Mounce rolled off four-straight wins by fall before defeating Jake Hicks of Polo by a 9-6 decision in the final.
“This was a very special day for junior Mason Mounce,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “He joined an elite group of THS wrestlers like Karson Hill and Jacob Spillman, picking up his 100th career win as a Bulldog after winning his last match against Jacob Hicks of Polo. I am very proud of Mason to achieve such a task in only his junior season. He has worked so hard to reach this point and it is just really nice to see how much his hard work has paid off.”
Behind Mounce, Trenton got a runner-up finish from Drew Rorebeck (126) and a third-place finish from Thomas Mack (160). Rorebeck ran to the title match in his weight class with three wins by fall and a bye. In the first-place match, Rorebeck was handed his first loss as he was pinned by Garrett Zahner of Brookfield. Mack picked up a 19-2 tech fall and a 12-4 major decision to reach the semifinals where he was pinned. In the third-place match, however, Mack bounced back with an 8-2 decision win over Adam Putman of Albany.
“Drew Rorebeck wrestled his way through a tough bracket to place second, which is quite an accomplishment for a freshman at a tournament of this caliber,” Bacon said. “Thomas Mack had another great day, placing third in his bracket with his only loss to Austin Ward of South Harrison. Thomas improves a little bit more every week. I was extremely happy with the way he wrestled.”
Wynne DeVorss (138) and Terrin Ellis (285) each picked up fifth-place finishes for the Bulldogs and Trey Shields (182) came in sixth. Ellis finished the day 3-2, winning three-straight matches after an 0-2 start. DeVorss also had a strong finish to his tournament, winning each of his final two matches to finish the day 3-2 as well. Shields was 2-1, but fell in the fifth-place match, finishing 2-2 overall at the tournament.
Other wrestlers in action for Trenton included Conner Lovell, who was 10th at 106 with a 0-5 record; Brendon Johnson, who was eighth at 113 with a 1-4 record; Logan Lowrey, who was 12th at 132 with a 0-3 record and one bye; Colton Allen, who was 11th at 145 with a 1-2 record and one received bye; Dalton Ellis, who was eighth at 152 with a 2-2 record; Chris Brown, who was 12th at 195 with an 0-5 record, forfeiting three matches due to injury; and Cole Little, who was 11th at 220 with a 2-2 record.
“Overall we had a pretty good day,” Bacon said. “We placed fifth out of 17 teams. It was a good tournament because we saw some different opponents, including some Class 2 teams. I still think there were a few matches that we did not wrestle to our full potential, which can really change the team score pretty quick. We have to be able to win those close matches at the end of the day. Some of our younger kids like Cole Little, Wynne DeVorss and Colton Allen did pick up some important wins for us to help the team score tremendously.”
Host-school Plattsburg won the tournament with Brookfield placing second and Savannah finishing third. South Harrison was fourth and Trenton rounded out the top five.
The Trenton wrestling team will be back on the mat on Tuesday night for a triangular in Brookfield with Richmond. First matches are scheduled for 6 p.m.
