Area Hoops Roundup 1-14-14

Several area teams were in action on Tuesday night as Gilman City and Tri-County squared off in a regular HDC Conference doubleheader and Princeton, Mercer, the Newtown-Harris boys and Grundy R-5 girls all saw tournament action in either Milan or Bethany.

The Gilman City girls rolled over Tri-County, running out to a 17-1 first quarter lead and never looking back. By halftime the lead had swelled to 30-1. Gilman continued to cruise in the second half, taking the game by 50 points.
“I saw some good things to build on,” Lady Hawks’ Head Coach Jacob Shipman said. “It helped get our confidence up going into next week.”
Gilman was paced by Hailey Burrows, who scored 14 points and Mikayla Toombs added nine.
The win vaulted the Lady Hawks to 7-6 on the season while Tri-County fell to 0-10.

The boys game wasn’t much closer than the girls contest as Tri-County earned a split of the night with a big win. The Mustangs ran out to a 16-6 first quarter lead and put the game away in the third quarter with a 23-0 run.
“I’m very proud of the team’s effort,” Hawks’ Head Coach Daryl Betts said. “We only had five players in the game, dealing with illness. We worked a triangle and two and made the players work hard to get their points.”
Nate Sutton and Dillon Cook each scored 13 points to pace Tri-County. Gilman was led by Dylan Sievering’s 10 points in the loss while Alec Sievering added seven and Skylar Reynolds scored two.
The win improved Tri-County to 5-7, while the Hawks fell to 0-11.
Gilman City’s teams will travel to Newtown for a conference doubleheader next Tuesday, while Tri-County’s next action will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 22, taking on the junior varsity teams from Trenton at home in Jamesport. Both doubleheaders begin at 6 p.m.

NE Nodaway Girls 33

The Princeton Lady Tigers opened play in the South Harrison Tournament with a win, defeating Northeast Nodaway in a close contest. The Lady Tigers led 15-3 after the first quarter, but Northeast Nodaway battled back, cutting the lead to just three points entering the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers responded well, however, closing the game with a small 11-8 run to seal the win.
Paige Phillips scored 18 points to pace the Lady Tigers and Trinity Kile added eight points. The win boosted Princeton to 5-5 overall on the season and moved it to the tournament semifinals where it will face South Harrison Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

NE Nodaway Boys 38

The Princeton Tigers advanced to the South Harrison Tournament semifinals as well, handing Northeast Nodaway a 19-point loss. The Tigers overcame a slow start that saw them trail 13-6 after a quarter of play and 21-19 at halftime. Princeton would outscore Northeast Nodaway 38-17 in the second half, roaring back to rout their opponents.
Brant Faulkner had 22 points to lead the Tigers while Steffan Elliot added 12 and Drew Cox scored 11. The win moved the Tigers to 7-3 on the season. Princeton will take on Putnam County on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in the semifinals in Bethany.
Mercer Girls 64
Grundy R-5 Girls 20

The Mercer Lady Cardinals had no trouble getting past Grundy in the opening round of the Milan Tournament, blasting the Lady Panthers by 44 points. Mercer led 11-2 after the opening quarter then really turned up the pressure with a 27-8 run in the second.
“Mercer’s pressure defense wore us down,” Grundy R-5 Coach Les Jackson said.
Mercer was led by Bailey Owens, who scored 21 points in the win. Nicole Kost added 12 and Hayley Sample and Lindsay Wyatt both finished with 11. Eight different Lady Cardinals scored in the win. Grundy, meanwhile, got 10 points and five rebounds from Emily Milazzo and four points and four steals from Elizabeth Novak. Matana Munday added nine rebounds and Mikaela Munday had six rebounds.
With the win Mercer improved to 10-0 on the season and advanced to the semifinals, where they will play at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
The Grundy girls fell to 3-7 with the loss and will be in consolation semifinal action on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Newtown-Harris Boys 45
Mercer Boys 40

The Newtown-Harris boys scored a big win, defeating Mercer in the first round of the Milan Tournament. Newtown was paced by Micah Busick, who scored 22 points. Adam Crawford added 13 for the Tigers. Mercer, meanwhile, got 12 points from John Girdner and Garrett Noe and Bryer Noe each finished with nine points.
With the win, Newtown improved to 6-6 while Mercer fell to 5-5. Newtown will be in semifinal action on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. while Mercer will play in the consolation semifinals on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
