Area Watershed Work Planned

Jan 14, 2014 | Headline News

Parts of Grundy, Linn and Sullivan counties are included in the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative, which provides financial and technical assistance to help farmers implement conservation practices that target runoff from agricultural land.
Under MRBI, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will work with conservation partners to provide technical assistance and a total of $9.8 million in financial assistance during federal fiscal year 2014 for projects in 19 Missouri watersheds. This area is part of the Medicine and Muddy Creek watershed, a smaller watershed within the Mississippi River basin.
The main focus of the technical and financial assistance in the Medicine and Muddy Creek watershed will be on improving water quality by controlling erosion on cropland, said Scott McClure, Grundy County NRCS District Conservationist. Funding may be available to landowners on a competitive basis who apply by Feb. 21.
MRBI helps farmers and ranchers improve water quality throughout the Mississippi River basin. It uses a conservation systems approach to manage nitrogen and phosphorous. Its goal is to minimize runoff and reduce downstream nutrient loading.
