Area Hoops Roundup 1-11-14

There were a slew of area high school basketball games over the weekend as several area teams were in action on Friday and the HDC Conference Tournament trophy games were made up on Saturday at Tri-County High School in Jamesport.
FRIDAY SCORES
Maysville Girls 54
Princeton Girls 21

The Lady Tigers had a rough time at Maysville, falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter and never recovering. The Lady Wolverines pulled away throughout the game en route to the big win.
Paige Phillips scored 14 points to lead Princeton, which fell to 4-5 on the season with the loss.
Maysville Boys 58
Princeton Boys 56

The Princeton Tigers suffered a close loss against Maysville, falling by a mere two points.
The Tigers were led by Brant Faulkner, who had 16 points in the loss. Justin Hamilton added 15 points and Steffan Elliot finished with 12.
With the loss, the Tigers fell to 6-3 on the season.
North Harrison Girls 62
Tri-County Girls 14

The Tri-County girls dropped to 0-9 on the season with a loss to North Harrison.
The Lady Mustangs were paced by Chassity Smith and Katana Almond in the loss, both of whom scored four points.
North Harrison Boys 41
Tri-County Boys 39

The Tri-County boys fared better in their match-up with North Harrison, but still wound up on the losing end, falling by two points.
The Mustangs were led by Dillon Cook’s 20 points and Tyler Lane and Russell Huston added eight and six points, respectively. Tri-County fell to 4-7 on the season with the loss.
Gilman City Girls 50
Albany Girls 37

The Gilman City girls scored a big non-conference win over Albany, handling the Lady Warriors by 13 points.

Gilman City Boys 13

The Gilman boys were no match for Albany on Friday as the Warriors raced past the Hawks in a non-conference match-up. Albany jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter and pulled away throughout the game.
Gilman was paced by Dylan Sievering, who scored six points in the loss. Gilman fell to 0-10 on the season with the loss.
Pattonsburg Girls 51
Newtown-Harris Girls 32

The Newtown girls couldn’t knock off Pattonsburg at home, falling by 19 points.
Newtown was led by Becca Johnson, who had 12 points, and Abby Wells finished with eight for the Lady Tigers, who dropped to 3-8 on the season with the loss.
Newtown-Harris Boys 63
Pattonsburg Boys 25

The Newtown-Harris boys picked up a win over Pattonsburg, defeating the Panthers in handy fashion.
Zach Coin had 26 points and Adam Crawford added 21 in the Tigers’ route.

Mercer Girls 53
Pattonsburg 40

The Mercer girls wrapped up their fifth-straight HDC Conference Tournament title Saturday, defeating Pattonsburg by 13 points. Mercer pulled out to a 23-18 halftime lead and then outscored Pattonsburg 15-11 in both the third and fourth quarters.
The Lady Cardinals were paced by Bailey Owens, who had 21 points, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Lindsay Wyatt added 19 points, three assists and two steals and Nicole Kost finished with 13 points and three steals.
The five-straight HDC tournament titles for Mercer equals a conference record for most consecutive tournament titles, tying Winston, which won five from 1979-1983, and North Harrison, which won five from 1955-1959.
With the win, Mercer improved to 9-0 on the season.
North Harrison Girls 49
Gilman City Girls 36

The Gilman City girls were denied a third-place title as North Harrison handed the Lady Hawks a 13-point loss.
The Lady Hawks were paced by Mikayla Toombs and Darianne Carey, both of whom scored 11 points in the loss.
With the weekend split, Gilman City moved to 6-6 on the season.
Grundy R-5 Boys 59
Mercer Boys 49

The Grundy R-5 boys grabbed a third-place title at the HDC Tournament, defeating Mercer by 10 points. Grundy jumped out to a 19-8 first quarter lead and the two squads played evenly throughout the rest of the game.
Grundy was led by Destin Gann, who had 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Cade Mullenix added 14 points and five steals and Clayton Radcliff finished with nine points and four assists. Grundy also got eight points from Elliott O’Neal, six points and six assists from Mason Larson and six points from Stuart Eller.
With the win, Grundy moved to 6-3 while Mercer dropped to 5-4.
Winston Girls 48
Grundy R-5 Girls 37

The Grundy girls’ bid for a consolation title fell short as Winston handed the Lady Panthers an 11-point loss.
“Rebounding and foul trouble hurt us, especially in the fourth quarter,” Lady Panthers’ Head Coach Les Jackson said. “I’m proud of how the girls battled.”
Elizabeth Novak led Grundy in the loss, finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds. Matana Munday had eight points and eight rebounds and Mckenna Owens added five points and 10 rebounds. Kylie Littleton finished with five points and five steals and Emily Milazzo had six rebounds and three steals.
The loss dropped the Grundy girls to 3-6 on the year.
Newtown-Harris Boys 56
North Harrison Boys 52

The Newtown-Harris boys picked up the consolation title at the HDC Conference Tournament with a four-point win over North Harrison.
The two wins on the weekend moved Newtown to 5-6.
