Trenton Wrestlers Top Marceline, Drop A Pair Of Close Ones

Dec 20, 2013 | Sports & Recreation, Wrestling

The Trenton High School wrestling team traveled to Lathrop on Thursday night to take part in a quad with the host Mules, Plattsburg and Marceline. Trenton fell 42-33 to Plattsburg, lost a close one, 40-39, to Lathrop and finished up the night defeating Marceline 45-36.
vs. Plattsburg
Trenton found itself in a hole early against Plattsburg as Daniel Rodriguez (106) and Brendon Johnson (113) were both pinned and the Bulldogs were open at 120. Plattsburg picked up more points at 126 where Dominic Hartman lost by a 4-2 decision.
Trenton got on the board at 132 where Colby Weaver won by fall. The rally was on from that point as Wynne DeVorss (138) and Dalton Ellis (145) both won by fall. Colton Allen lost by fall at 152, but Thomas Mack (160) and Mason Mounce (170) followed with wins by fall for Trenton.
Things went south from that point, however, as Trey Shields (182), Chris Brown (195) and Cole Little (220) were all pinned by their Plattsburg opponents. The dual closed with a win by forfeit from Terrin Ellis at 285.
vs. Lathrop
Trenton’s dual with Lathrop was the closest of the night, but Trenton fell one point short.
The dual started at 120, where Trenton was open, but the Bulldogs tied the score at 126 where Drew Rorebeck won by fall. Weaver (132) lost by fall at 138, DeVorss (138) lost by a 12-4 major decision and Dalton Ellis (145) and Allen (152) were pinned, giving Lathrop a large advantage.
The Bulldogs battled back with three straight wins by fall coming from Mack (160), Mounce (170) and Shields (182). Brown was pinned at 195, but Trenton won at 220 with a forfeit victory for Little and Terrin Ellis (285) and Rodriguez (106) both won by fall to give Trenton a five-point lead. Johnson was pinned in the final match of the dual, however, and Lathrop picked up the one-point win.
“The two matches of the night that people around the state will be talking about would have to be Drew Rorebeck and Mason Mounce against their Lathrop opponents,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “Drew was up against senior Caleb Osborn, who is currently ranked number one in the state. After giving up a takedown in the first, Drew came back in the second period, locked up a cradle, and pinned Osborn for a very exciting win. Mounce was up against the returning state champion and number-one ranked Josh Hartzell. Mason only gave up one takedown and dominated the rest of the match until it reached the end, with a final score of 12-5. I was extremely happy for these two tonight. I was also proud of the rest of the kids tonight in the way they went out and represented Trenton High School.”
vs. Marceline
Trenton kept from getting swept on the night, defeating Marceline in its final dual.
Johnson (113) lost by fall to open the Marceline dual and Trenton was open at 120, giving the Tigers an early edge. Rorebeck got Trenton on the board with a win by fall at 126, but Marceline pinned Weaver at 132. The schools traded pins as DeVorss won by fall at 138 and Dalton Ellis was pinned at 145.
Trenton made a run as Allen won by forfeit at 152, Mack won at 160 by a 6-1 decision, Mounce won by forfeit at 170 and Shields won by fall at 182. Brown picked up a win by forfeit at 195 before Marceline snapped the streak with a win by fall over Little at 220. Terrin Ellis followed that up with his second win by fall of the night at 285. The dual closed with Rodriguez being pinned at 106.
“Overall, it was a great night for us,” Bacon said. “We lost two duals and won one, but we barely lost those duals to two of the toughest Class 1 teams in Missouri. We had a lot of standout performances. Trey Shields and Terrin Ellis stepped up and got some big wins for us. Thomas Mack won all three and looked better than he ever has.”
The Bulldogs, now 4-4 in duals this season, will be back on the mat on Saturday, weather permitting, as they host the annual Trenton Wrestling Tournament. Matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
