Three area schools were in non-conference basketball action on Thursday night. Mercer and Princeton squared off in their annual set of rivalry games, playing in Mercer this year, and Grundy R-5 saw its first road action of the season, traveling to Green City.

The Mercer girls continued their hot start to the season, defeating Princeton by a wide margin. The Lady Cardinals outscored the visitors 25-1 in the first quarter and never looked back.
Leading the way for Mercer was Nicole Kost and Lindsay Wyatt, both of whom scored 19 points. Bailey Owens added 13 points. Princeton was paced by Paige Phillips who scored six points, and Rebecca Phillips added four. With the win, Mercer improved to 2-0 on the season while Princeton dropped to 3-3 overall.

The Princeton boys jumped out to an 18-10 first quarter lead and held the advantage into the third quarter, where Mercer made a run, closing the gap to three points with one quarter left. Princeton recovered and put away its rivals, closing the game on an 18-13 run.
Brant Faulkner led Princeton with 29 points and Steffan Elliot added 13. Princeton also got nine points from Justin Hamilton. Mercer was paced by 16 points from Cash Hartley. Garrett Noe added 12 points, John Girdner had nine and Grant Widner finished with eight. The win moved Princeton to 4-2 while Mercer’s boys dropped to 0-2.

The Grundy girls kept things close early and actually led Green City 16-14 at halftime. Green City bounced back with a huge second half, however, outscoring Grundy 18-4 in the third quarter and 13-4 in the fourth to pick up the victory.
Grundy was paced by 10 points from Emily Milazzo and Matana Munday added six points and 13 rebounds. Grundy also got four points, six rebounds and three steals from Elizabeth Novak and Mckenna Owens finished with four points. With the loss, Grundy fell to 0-4 on the season.

Grundy’s boys held a 15-8 lead after the first quarter, but a 20-14 Green City run in the second quarter and a 22-13 Green City run in the fourth quarter were enough to hand the Panthers the loss.
The Grundy R-5 boys were led by 17 points and six rebounds from Mason Larson and Destin Gann had 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Stuart Eller finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, Cade Mullenix had 10 points and five assists and Mason Radcliff had five points. The loss dropped the R-5 boys to 3-1.
