All six area high schools were in basketball action on Tuesday night. Several schools were back to regular play after being in tournaments last week, while the Mercer teams officially opened their season and Grundy R-5 got back to work.

The Grundy girls suffered another close loss, falling by just seven points. Mckenna Owens had 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals and Elizabeth Novak added 10 points and three steals to lead Grundy. Emily Milazzo added nine points and five assists and Matana Munday finished with eight points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Panthers (0-3).

The Grundy boys remained undefeated, moving to 3-0 with a big win over Tina-Avalon. Destin Gann led the way with 14 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and five steals and Clayton Radcliff and Mason Radcliff had 12 and 10 points respectively. Mason Larson added eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals and Cade Mullenix had five points, six rebounds and three assists. Grundy also got four points, 10 rebounds and three steals from Stuart Eller.

Gilman City’s girls didn’t have much luck against Gallatin, falling to 2-3 on the season with the loss. Mikayla Toombs had 12 points to pace the Lady Hawks and Saige Holmes added 10 points.

Gilman City didn’t match-up well with Gallatin and it showed in the final score as the Hawks dropped to 0-5 with a 31-point loss. Alec Sievering and Dylan Sievering both hit double figures for the Hawks, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively.

Princeton’s girls followed up winning the Albany Tournament’s consolation trophy with a close win over East Harrison. The Lady Tigers were led by Paige Phillips, who scored 20 points in the five-point victory. Maddie Enright added 10 points, Trinity Kile finished with seven, Rachelle Parks had four, Rebecca Phillips had three and Jasey Smith added two. The Lady Tigers improved to 3-2 overall with the win.

The Princeton boys were handed just their second loss, falling by 14 points to a tough East Harrison squad. The Tigers (3-2) were led by 18 points by Brant Faulkner and Hunter Boxley added 12. Steffan Elliot finished with eight, Jason McLain had five, Justin Hamilton had four and Drew Cox had two.

The Lady Tigers fell to 2-3 with a one-point loss. Madison Gibson led Newtown with seven points, Abby Wells and Becca Johnson scored six each and Paige Thompson had five.

Newtown improved to 2-3 on the season with a win over the Shamrocks. Adam Crawford had 24 points and Zach Coin added 19. Keone Stanton pulled down eight rebounds.

Tri-County’s girls fell to 0-6 with a big loss. Chassity Smith and Katana Almond each scored two points.

The Tri-County boys picked up another conference victory, moving to 3-3 overall. Tyler Lane led the Mustangs with 21 points and Dillon Cook added 12.
Mercer Girls 61

Mercer established a 1-0 start to the season on Tuesday night routing Green City in a big way. The Lady Cardinals were paced by a trio of freshmen. Bailey Owens had 24 points, Nicole Kost added 18 and Emily Sample finished with 11 for the Lady Cardinals.

The Mercer boys season didn’t get off to as good a start as the girls as the Cardinals suffered a 12-point loss. Mercer was paced by Cashman Hartley, who scored 10 points, and Garrett Noe, who finished with nine. The loss established an 0-1 start to the season for the Cardinals.
