Several area teams were in action on Tuesday night as Newtown-Harris played in the Gallatin Tournament, Princeton played in the Albany Tournament and Grundy R-5 was at home, playing host to North Harrison in their first HDC Conference match-ups of the season.
North Harrison Girls 48
Grundy R-5 Girls 39
The Grundy R-5 girls fell to 0-2 on Tuesday night, suffering a nine-point loss to North Harrison. In what was a close game throughout, Grundy just couldn’t quite get past the Lady Shamrocks.
“Down four with about a minute left we were forced to foul allowing North Harrison to win by nine,” Grundy R-5 Coach Les Jackson said. “The game was won on the boards where North Harrison out-rebounded us 59-38.
Elizabeth Novak led Grundy with 18 points and three assists and Matana Munday finished with nine points and 17 rebounds. Grundy also got six points, three assists and three steals from Kylie Littleton and six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals from Emily Milazzo.
Grundy R-5 Boys 54
North Harrison Boys 36
The Grundy R-5 boys managed to split the night with North Harrison, following up the girls loss with a 54-36 victory. Grundy jumped ahead early with a 19-10 first quarter run and were never outscored in a single quarter on their way to a win that moved the Panthers to 2-0 on the season.
“Foul trouble plagued us all night, but our bench came in and did a great job,” Jackson said. “We continue to get contributions from everyone.”
Leading Grundy R-5 was Cade Mullenix, who had 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals. Clayton Radcliff added 13 points as well and had six steals. The Panthers also got 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals from Mason Larson and eight points and three steals from Stuart Eller. Mason Radcliff gave the Panthers six points.
Both Grundy R-5 teams will be back on the court on Tuesday, Dec. 10, playing host to Tina-Avalon in Galt. Action tips off with the girls game at 6 p.m.
Gallatin Girls 59
Newtown-Harris Girls 21
The Newtown-Harris girls saw their record evened at 1-1 on the season with a loss to Gallatin in the first round of the Gallatin Tournament.
The seventh-seeded Lady Tigers were paced by Becca Johnson, who had nine points in the loss to the tournament’s second seed. Abby Wells added five points, Roni Busick had four and Paige Thompson finished with three.
The Lady Tigers will now play Gilman City in the Gallatin Tournament consolation semifinals tonight at 7 o’clock.
Braymer Boys 59
Newtown-Harris Boys 43
The sixth-seeded Newtown-Harris Tigers were unable to knock off third-seeded Braymer on Tuesday night, falling by 16 points. A 15-4 run by Braymer to start the game, along with a 15-9 Braymer run to start the second half, proved to be too much for the Tigers to overcome.
Adam Crawford had 20 to lead Newtown and Zach Coin chipped in with 15. The Tigers also got four points from Ishmael Garcia and two points each from Ben Busick and Keone Stanton.
With the loss the Tigers fell to 0-2 on the season. Newtown will look to bounce back in the consolation semifinals tonight, taking on Tri-County at 5:45.
Stanberry Girls 40
Princeton Girls 32
The Princeton Lady Tigers found themselves in a close battle with GRC foe Stanberry in the first round of the Albany Tournament. But an 11-4 run that gave Stanberry the lead in the first quarter held up as Princeton fell to 0-2 with an eight-point loss.
Princeton was just 11-of-25 from the free throw line in the loss. Paige Phillips led Princeton with 15 points while Maddie Enright scored six. Rebecca Phillips added five points and Jasey Smith, Chelsie Jones and Trinity Kile all scored two points each.
With the loss, Princeton was bumped to the consolation semifinals where it will play tonight in Albany.
Princeton Boys 42
King City Boys 36
The Princeton boys basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Albany Tournament with a six-point win over King City. The Tigers led by a single point after the second and third quarters, but did enough in the final frame to put themselves in the winners bracket.
Brant Faulkner led the Tigers with 16 points and Steffan Elliot added 14. Princeton also got six points from Hunter Boxley, four from Drew Cox and two from Justin Hamilton.
With the win, Princeton improved to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers will be back on the court in Albany on Thursday, playing a semifinal game.
