The North Central Missouri College basketball teams drew a split on the road Wednesday night against Southwestern Community College in Creston, IA. The Lady Pirates came from behind to pick up a 55-53 win, however, the men were on the receiving end of a come-from-behind win as Southwestern secured a 57-52 victory over the Pirates.
Lady Pirates
Things looked bleak for the Lady Pirates in the opening half as Southwestern raced out to a 27-18 lead in the first half. The Lady Pirates struggled from downtown in the first half, going 0-for-10 from the three-point line. Lexi Hope caught fire in the second, knocking down five three-pointers and spurring a North Central rally that culminated with a two-point win.
Hope led the Lady Pirates with 18 points and Kayla Oetterer posted a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds. North Central also got six assists from Brooke Parton.
With the win, the Lady Pirates improved to 4-2 on the season.
The NCMC women will next be in action on Saturday, traveling to Moberly Community College. Tip time for the game is set for 2 p.m.
Pirates
The North Central men found themselves down 10-2 early, but rallied behind a 21-4 run to take a 23-14 lead. The Pirates led 31-25 at the half. NCMC went cold from the field in the second half, however, as Southwestern rallied back to take control of the game. The Pirates had the deficit cut to two points with under two minutes left, but hit just one of their final nine shots and were two-for-six from the free throw line in that stretch, falling by five points.
Xavier Newson led NCMC with 21 points while Tyler Peterson added 13 and Jory Woodson finished with 11.
The loss dropped the Pirates to 4-3 on the season.
The NCMC men will look to bounce back this weekend, playing two games in Galesburg, IL. The Pirates will face Carl Sandburg College on Friday at 8 p.m. and Blackhawk West on Saturday at 1 p.m.
