Area School Boards Hold Meetings

A tax levy, graduation dates and CD investments were among the items addressed on Thursday night during meetings of the boards of education for Grundy R-5, Laredo R-7 and Tri-County R-7 school districts.
Laredo R-7
The Laredo R-7 Board made plans to place a tax levy renewal proposal on the April election ballot during its meeting.
According to information provided by Superintendent Phil Fox, discussion was held concerning the five-year tax, which is set to expire in April. Voters will be asked to renew the $1.40 tax, which was first approved by voters in 2004 and approved a second time in 2009.
Approval was given to re-investing a CD coming due with Putnam County Bank as well as to the local compliance plan for special education. The board heard a first reading of MSBA policy updates and reviewed the budget.
The board discussed upcoming changes involving school insurance, but took no action. The surplus items auction will close on Oct. 14.
Fox reported that the new scoreboard is in place and there was a discussion on other projects for a work day to be held in the near future. The district is still looking for a good used bus to be used for a spare. The final school field trip was to be held today with kindergarten through second grade going to Charlie’s Pumpkin Patch.
An executive session for personnel was held with no announcement made.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 11.
Grundy R-5
The Grundy R-5 Board of Education set the 2014 graduation date and approved several items during its meeting.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, graduation for Grundy R-5 seniors will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11 in the high school gymnasium at Galt.
Approval was given to the 2012-13 school audit, performed by Lockridge, Constant and Conrad, LLC. No major weaknesses or problems were noted. Also approved was a change in bus routes, with a handicapped accessible route to replace one of the regular routes.
The board was informed that new computers and monitors were purchased with grant money to update the computers in the high school and elementary school libraries as well as the high school business room.
Faculty reports were heard regarding seventh through 12th grade math and kindergarten.
Elementary Principal Kristi Weldon reported that attendance to date is at 97.6 percent. The school has received a grant for playground equipment and she recognized several individuals and organizations for donations as well as volunteer time for various activities. She also announced several upcoming events.
Secondary Principal Randy Huffman said the seventh grade class had the top attendance for both August and September. He updated the board on several upcoming events and also recognized the boys and girls softball teams for their seasons, which just concluded.
There will be no classes on Friday, Oct. 25. Parent-teacher conferences are being held on Oct. 24 from 1 to 6 p.m.
Following an executive session, the board hired Rachel Lorenz to coach the elementary boys basketball team this year.
The next meeting of the board is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 at the school in Galt.
Tri-County R-7
The Tri-County R-7 Board took care of several matters during its meeting.
Superintendent David Probasco said the board agreed to place $100,000 from a matured CD into the general fund and the remainder, $150,000, into a three-month CD to be consolidated when state and federal funds are received. The district utilized this same procedure last year to maintain a consistent cash flow.
The board approved two bus routes as presented as well as discussed the purchase of a route bus. Budgeted money available after the purchase of the activity bus is to be used. The board asked Probasco to move ahead with the search for a bus.
The board heard a request for additional bus stops in town, but tabled discussion. There was no action taken on a proposal for the district to pay a portion of dual credit courses offered to students.
Approval was given to two fundraising requests. The junior class will be pumping gasoline at a station in Chillicothe while the student council will hold a haunted house in the old school gymnasium.
Approval was given for FFA members to attend the national convention in Louisville, KY and heard a report on the district budget, but took no action. The board assigned surplus property as presented, including old light fixtures from the gym and various tables, desks and file cabinets in storage.
Following an executive session, the board voted to purchase new varsity basketball uniforms with the use of existing funds, money from fundraisers and a new budgeted amount.
The next board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14.
