The Trenton Lady Bulldog tennis team had a rough time on Thursday as they hosted Kirksville on senior day in Trenton. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to take a match from the Lady Tigers as Kirksville won the dual 9-0.
Trenton was able to keep most of the matches close, however. In singles play, Megan Derry and Alexis Fender both lost 8-4 and Alvynne Villacampa fell 8-6. Siara Bailey took her match to a tiebreaker, before falling 9-8 with a 7-3 loss in the tiebreaker. Hannah Sowder fell 8-2 and Hannah Brinser lost 8-5.
Doubles play saw Kirksville continue to have Trenton’s number. Derry and Fender fell 8-3, Bailey and Villacampa lost 8-4 and Brinser and Sowder fell 8-3.
“It was a tough loss for Senior Night, but the girls should be proud of how hard they’ve worked this season, and how much they’ve improved since August,” Lady Bulldogs’ Coach Abby Gott said.
Trenton fell to 5-11 on the season with the loss.
The junior varsity had a rough dual as well, falling 8-0 to Kirksville’s JV. Hannah Robinson and Tristan Dugan combined to lose a pair of doubles matches, one 6-3 and the other 6-4. Ashley Allen and Jessica Harrison were handed losses of 7-6, after a 7-3 tiebreaker loss, and 6-2. Kellie Smith and Michelle Stewart dropped matches of 6-4 and 6-1 and Hannah Farmer and Makaylah Gordon were defeated 6-4 and 6-1.
Trenton’s tennis team now turns to district play. The Lady Bulldogs will host the team district tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the THS tennis courts. Trenton enters the team tournament as the two-time defending district champions, but this will be the first time the Lady Bulldogs have hosted the tournament.
The Trenton netters will travel to Chillicothe on Thursday for the individual singles and doubles district tournaments.
