The Trenton Lady Bulldogs tennis team will take some bumps and bruises this season as it tries to replace five of six varsity starters from a season ago. Trenton took its first bump on Thursday, falling 7-2 to St. Joseph-Lafayette in the season opener at the THS tennis courts.
Megan Derry, making the jump from number four to number one this year, suffered an 8-1 loss at the top as the Lady Bulldogs dropped the first four contests of the dual. Alexis Fender was also handed an 8-1 loss at number two and Alvynne Villacampa was defeated 8-0 at number three. Siara Bailey showed some promise at number four, but still fell 8-3.
The Lady Bulldogs got on the board at number five, where Hannah Sowder delivered a dominating 8-0 win in the first varsity match of her career. Hannah Brinser rounded out singles play with an 8-5 loss at number six.
In doubles play Lafayette continued to have Trenton’s number, taking two of three. Fender and Derry fell 8-5 and Villacampa and Bailey lost 8-3. Sowder continued to have the visitor’s number, however, teaming with Brinser for an 8-3 victory.
“The girls played hard in the heat and although it was a tough way to start the season, it let us know what we need to focus on to move forward in our next matches,” Lady Bulldog Head Coach Abby Gott said. “I was especially proud of Hannah Sowder and Hannah Brinser stepping up and getting our two wins in their first varsity matches.”
With the loss, Trenton established an 0-1 start to the season.
The junior varsity squad fared better than their varsity teammates, winning 3-2. Tristan Dugan and Ashley Allen combined for a 6-4 doubles win and Hannah Robinson and Megan Ellis scored a 6-4 doubles win. The duo of Jessica Harrison and Kellie Smith picked up Trenton’s third win-with a 6-1 victory.
Also in JV action were the doubles team of Michelle Stewart and Hannah Farmer, which fell 7-5 and Makayla Gordon, who lost the only JV singles match of the dual, 6-4.
Trenton’s tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, playing host to Chillicothe at the THS tennis courts at 4 p.m.
