The Trenton Blue Jays AAA American Legion baseball team began play in the district tournament on Monday night in Moberly. Trenton took on Hannibal in the first round and stumbled to a 13-3 loss.
The game was close early on as the Blue Jays struck first with a run in the first inning. Hannibal would answer with a run of their own in the second inning, however, before Trenton pushed the advantage back to a single run with a score in the fourth inning.
Trenton’s 2-1 lead would carry over to the fifth inning, but it was there that Hannibal took control of the contest. Trenton yielded five runs in the fifth, falling behind 6-2. The Blue Jays plated one more run, keeping the deficit manageable at 6-3, but Hannibal added a run in the sixth and six in the seventh to end the game by the 10-run rule at 13-3.
Kylen Easly took the loss on the hill for the Blue Jays. At the plate, Jacob Wood gave Trenton a double and Easly had two singles. Brandon Beeler added a pair of singles as well and Hadley Williams recorded a hit for the Blue Jays.
With the loss, the Blue Jays were dropped to the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament. Trenton awaits the outcome of tonight’s match-up between Chillicothe and Moberly. If favored Moberly tops Chillicothe, the Blue Jays will play their second district game at home at Burleigh Grimes Field in Trenton on Thursday. A Chillicothe victory would send Trenton back to Moberly to face the host team.
