A tractor pull, art show, walk/run and garden tractor pull are among the activities planned at this year’s Gooseberry Festival, which gets under way on Friday night and continues through Sunday.

Events kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday with the Iowa-Missouri sanctioned truck and tractor pull at the North Central Missouri Fairgrounds grandstand. Persons can contact Kevin Stover at 660-247-1397 to register. Admission is $10 for adults. Students and military personnel with proper identification are admitted for $5 and children 12-and-under can attend for free.
A whole host of events are planned for Saturday, beginning with the 5K/10K run/walk, sponsored by the Grundy County Health Department. Registration will take place at the Eastside Park enclosed shelterhouse at 7 a.m., with the run/walk to begin at 7:30 a.m. There is no cost to participate and pre-registration can be done on the health department’s website, www.grundycohealthdept.org.
The Trenton Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Little League Tournament throughout the day on Saturday at Johnson Field. The four-team round-robin event gets under way at 8 a.m., with the final game set for 6 p.m. Squads from Trenton, Gallatin, Milan and Chillicothe are scheduled to take part.
The Rock Barn will be the site for several events, beginning at 9 a.m. with registration for the gooseberry cooking contest. Pies, jams and jellies made with the festival’s namesake will be judged at 9:30 a.m. and prizes will be awarded.
An art show is scheduled in the courtyard area of the Rock Barn, featuring work by the Trenton Art Guild. There is no admission to view the work. For more information or to make an entry, persons can contact Loreen McDonald at 339-7088 or Cheri McHargue at 359-6161.
Also in the courtyard will be tool sharpening. Persons can bring their hoes, shovels and shears from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free sharpening.
Craft, food and novelty vendors will also be located around the Rock Barn from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dockery Chapel Church will be selling pies and baked goods and free hot dogs and drinks will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Persons interested in reserving a booth space can contact Dr. Nick McHargue at 359-3800.
A horseshoe pitching contest is slated at Eastside Park. A clinic will be held at 10 a.m. with a tournament to follow. For more information, persons can call Terry Bosley at 357-2493 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Bud Cox Antique and Classic Machinery Show will take place in the livestock pavillion of the Rock Barn area throughout the day. Weather permitting, there will be a farm equipment parade at 1 p.m., driving past Eastview Manor Care Center and Sunnyview Nursing Home, then down Princeton Road to 17th Street. The route continues west on 17th Street, turning south on Main to Ninth Street, where it will head back to Normal Street and north to the fairground area. Events are also planned at the North Missouri Saddle Club during the day. Persons wanting more information can contact Lance Croy.
Wesley United Methodist Church will have its annual “Summer Smoker” from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. A pulled pork meal is available for $6 while a hot dog dinner is $4.
KTTN and PAR Broadcasting will sponsor the annual Texaco Country Showdown at Sesquicentennial Park. The program gets under way at 7 p.m. Six contestants are scheduled to perform with the winner advancing to the North Missouri State Show at the Isle of Capri in Boonville on Friday, Sept. 6.
A garden tractor pull is planned for 1 p.m. on Sunday at the NCM Fairgrounds. For more information, persons can call Mike Kirschner, who is organizing the event.
Soccer games are scheduled on the old Griffin Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
The Grundy County Museum will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, with a paid admission, persons will be treated to homemade gooseberry ice cream from 2 to 3 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. The exhibit, “Made in Grundy County,” will also be on display.
