Tracys Win District Doubles Title

Oct 5, 2012 | Sports & Recreation, Tennis

Just two days after wrapping up Trenton’s second-straight team district title, the Tracy twins were district champions again, this time leaning on only each other.
Jaci and Jessica Tracy, Trenton’s number one and two tennis players respectively and top doubles team, combined to win the doubles bracket of the individual district tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Maryville’s top doubles duo in Chillicothe Thursday.

Jaci and Jessica opened play against a Cameron duo, after receiving a bye in the first round. The Tracys had no trouble putting the Lady Dragons’ duo away, winning 6-2, 6-3. They then beat a Savannah tandem in the semifinals by the same score, 6-2, 6-3, before topping Maryville for Trenton’s second individual tennis district championship in the past three years, joining Alyssa Dougan, who was the singles bracket district champion in 2010.
“I’m so excited for Jaci and Jessica,” Lady Bulldog Head Coach Abby Gott said. “They played great tennis against the number-one seed Maryville. They were able to stay focused the entire match and played very consistent tennis.”
Trenton also had another doubles team and two singles players in action at individual districts in Chillicothe. Megan Derry and Maria Stevenson were in action in the doubles bracket as well. The duo received a first-round bye, but couldn’t advance after falling in their first match on the court, despite pushing it to a third set. Derry and Stevenson fell to a Savannah team 6-4, 5-7, 4-6.
“Maria and Megan had a disappointing doubles loss,” Gott said. “They worked hard, though, and fought until the very end.”
In singles action, Megan Sole and Magie Steinhoff suffered the same fate as Derry and Stevenson. Both were eliminated in their first matches on the court. Steinhoff was defeated 6-1, 6-4 and Sole lost 6-0, 6-0.
“Megan and Magie both got a tough draw in the singles bracket,” Gott said. “I’m proud of how they didn’t let that bother them and still went out and played hard. It shows a lot about their character.”
The district champion Tracys will be back in action in the sectional doubles bracket on Monday at Chillicothe.
The entire Trenton tennis team will be in team sectional action on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Kansas City, facing District 15 team champion St. Pius X. Action begins with first serves at noon.
