For the second year in a row, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs are district champions. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Chillicothe 5-3 in the tennis team district championship on Tuesday afternoon at the THS tennis courts.
It was the fourth time this season the Lady Bulldogs ran across their rivals and, like the three prior meetings (a home and home dual series and at the Chillicothe Quad), Trenton walked off the courts the victors.

“We can’t say enough about how proud we are of the season the girls continue to have,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Abby Gott said. “It has been their goal since the first day of practice to win districts and tonight they met that goal. It was a long, tough match, but our girls played hard and came out on top in front of a home crowd. It doesn’t get any more exciting than that.”
Trenton and Chillicothe split the first four matches of the dual as Chillicothe won the one and two matches and Trenton took the three and four matches.
Jaci Tracy lost 6-2, 6-1 at number one and Jessica Tracy fell 6-2, 6-1 at number two. Maria Stevenson won 6-0, 6-2, and Megan Derry picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Trenton would then take charge of the dual with the number five and six matches. Megan Sole won at number five, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, winning the middle set with a 7-5 tiebreaker. Magie Steinhoff dominated the number six match, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Trenton needed just one doubles win to clinch the district title. The Tracys fell 6-4, 6-7, 3-6, dropping the middle set on a 7-5 tiebreaker. The loss brought Chillicothe to within a single point, but Trenton put the Lady Hornets away for good with a 6-0, 6-2 win from Sole and Steinhoff.
Trenton as a team will now travel to Kansas City on Saturday to face District 15 champions St. Pius X in sectionals.
In the meantime, however, Trenton will be in action in Chillicothe on Thursday competing in the individual brackets portions of districts. Singles and doubles individual play begins at 9 a.m.
