It was a rough night for the Grundy R-5 High School softball teams on Tuesday night as they suffered a sweep at the hands of North Harrison on the road in Eagleville. The Lady Shamrocks took the girls game with a 9-2 win and the Shamrocks completed the HDC Conference sweep with a 9-5 victory over the Panthers.
Grundy R-5 Teams Swept On Road In Eagleville
In the girls game, North Harrison was able to score one run in the bottom of the first inning. But that was all the scoring there would be in the opening three frames. The teams traded two-run spots in the fourth before North Harrison finally broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. North Harrison added two more in the sixth, pulling away for the win.
“The girls had an excellent performance against the probable number-one seed in our district,” Lady Panthers’ Coach Curtis May said. “It was a very close game until the bottom of the fifth inning.”
Elizabeth Novak had a triple and an RBI for the Lady Panthers, now 5-7 on the season, and Emily Milazzo was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Lady Panthers are now off until district action in Princeton, which begins next week.
In the boys contest, Grundy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but that would be its last lead of the game. North Harrison bounced back with two in the bottom of the frame and another in the second, to go up 3-1. Grundy cut the lead to a lone run with one in the top of the third, but North Harrison again had an answer, coming back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The teams traded two-run spots in the fifth and Grundy added one in the sixth, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Shamrocks took the game by four runs.
“The boys battled hard against a strong North Harrison team,” Grundy boys’ Coach Les Jackson said. “North Harrison’s pitcher never allowed us to put together a big inning.”
Stuart Eller was 2-for-3 with a triple for the Panthers and Clayton Radcliff finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 6-5 on the season. The Grundy boys will return to action on Friday, facing Ridgeway at 5 p.m. in the Missouri Boys State Tournament in Chillicothe.
