In the girls contest, a four-run spot in the fifth was the only runs the Lady Panthers could push across the plate. Newtown tallied five, taking the game by a single run.
“Small mistakes cost us runs,” Lady Panthers’ Coach Curtis May said. “That was the difference in the game.”
Kylie Littleton led the Lady Panthers at the plate, driving in two runs. Kelsey Bummer was 2-for-3. Katie Coin was the losing pitcher for the Lady Panthers, who fell to 3-6 on the season with the loss.
In the boys game, Newtown grabbed a 2-1 lead in the first and stretched the advantage to 7-4 in the second. Errors proved to be costly for the Panthers as Newtown added three in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. Grundy, meanwhile, managed just two more runs and fell 13-6.
“Errors in the field hurt us all night,” Panthers’ Coach Les Jackson said.
Destin Gann was 1-for-1 at the plate for the Panthers and Stuart Eller was 1-for-3. Clayton Radcliff was 1-for-3 as well with a double.
Mason Larson took the loss in the circle for the Panthers, who dropped to 4-4 on the season with the loss.
Grundy will look to bounce back on Tuesday when it plays host to Gilman City in another HDC Conference doubleheader in Galt. Action begins at 5:30 p.m. with the girls game and the boys will follow. Newtown will be on the diamond in Eagleville Tuesday, facing North Harrison at 5:30 p.m.
