Trenton swept the varsity doubles medals and placed one in varsity singles to win the quad. The quad, which turned out to be a three-team competition this year, saw each team place three doubles teams into the doubles bracket and two individuals in the singles bracket. Trenton collected the most points from the two brackets combined to win the quad over the host Lady Hornets and Carrollton on Wednesday.
In the doubles bracket, Trenton had no equal. Jessica and Jaci Tracy, Trenton’s number-one doubles team, rolled past a Chillicothe duo 10-1 before defeating their teammates, Megan Sole and Magie Steinhoff, 10-4 in the semifinals. In the finals, the Tracys saw fellow Trenton netters again, this time Megan Derry and Maria Stevenson. The Tracys picked up the win and the doubles bracket championship 10-4.
Stevenson and Derry finished second, reaching the finals with a 10-0 win over a Carrollton team and a 10-4 win over a Chillicothe team. Sole and Steinhoff opened doubles play with a 10-1 win over Carrollton before the loss to the Tracys relegated them to the third-place match. The Trenton duo bounced back nicely from the loss to their teammates, winning third place with a 10-3 victory over Chillicothe.
In singles play, Alexis Fender placed third, going 2-1. Fender opened with a 10-0 win over a Carrollton opponent, but was relegated to the third place match with a 10-1 loss in the semifinals. Fender bounced back, however, defeating Chillicothe’s Ashley Blakely 10-7. Alvynne Villacampa was also in varsity singles action, going 2-1 and placing fifth. Villacampa dropped her opening match 10-0, but bounced back with wins of 10-1 and 10-4 to place fifth.
“The girls are not just playing well, they are playing smart,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Abby Gott said. “They’re not merely going out and hitting the ball, they are deciding what shots work best to win points. I’m incredibly proud of how they played today. It’s exciting to know that we will only continue to improve as we get farther into the season.”
The junior varsity was also in action at the quad, placing first in the JV portion of the event. Leah Husong was 2-0 with wins of 10-7 and 10-4 to take first place in the JV singles bracket. Her second win came against Siara Bailey, who was second in the JV singles bracket. Bailey reached the finals with a 10-3 semifinal win and finished 1-1.
In the JV doubles bracket, Trenton had the second-place team in Hannah Brinser and Tristan Dugan. Dugan and Brinser went 1-1 on the day, winning 10-6 in the semifinals and falling 10-3 in the finals.
Trenton’s tennis teams return to the court tonight, hosting Cameron in their first home dual of the season. First serves are set for 4 p.m. at the THS tennis courts.
