Grundy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held that advantage through two frames. In the third, Cainsville got on the board with a single run, but Grundy re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning, answering Cainsville’s run with one of its own.
Heading into the fifth inning, Grundy’s 2-1 lead was still intact, but Cainsville finally broke through, scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. That would be the difference as the 7-2 lead became the final score.
“We led 2-1 in the fifth inning,” Lady Panthers’ Coach Curtis May said. “Several mistakes allowed Cainsville to take the lead.”
Katie Coin was the losing pitcher for Grundy, throwing six innings and striking out six.
At the plate, Kylie Littleton and Elizabeth Novak were both 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Panthers.
The Grundy girls established an 0-1 start to the season with the loss, but will look to bounce back tonight as they play host to Winston in Galt. Action begins with the girls game at 5 p.m. and the boys will follow.
The Grundy boys were in action against Jefferson following the girls’ loss to Cainsville, but a blown transformer suspended the game. The game is scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, Sept. 4, following a girls-only match-up with Tri-County, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
