“Squeals, Thrills and Ferris Wheels” is the theme of the 2012 North Central Missouri Fair, which kicks off next Tuesday and runs through Saturday, Aug. 4.
NCM Fair Kicks Off On Tuesday
The first event of the fair is the annual parade, set to roll at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The 2011 NCM Fair Queen, Kami Nelson, will be the parade marshal. The fair will follow the traditional route, beginning on Harris Avenue and heading north to 17th Street; west on 17th Street to Main Street; south on Main Street to Ninth Street; then east on Ninth Street and back to the fairgrounds. A parade lineup will be listed in Monday’s Republican-Times.
The Trenton FFA Boosters will have their traditional first-night barbecue, which begins at 6 o’clock at the FFA cookshack. The $6 meal includes BBQ pork, applesauce, baked beans and a drink. The cookshack will also be open throughout the week, featuring daily specials as well as its traditional menu. Hours are from 5 p.m. to close on Tuesday and 10:30 a.m. to close on Wednesday through Saturday. The cookshack is a fundraiser for the local FFA chapter.
The grandstand show on the first night features an abundance of local talent in what has been described as a bluegrass/new-grass music show with a little classic rock thrown in. “Organized Chaos” will feature the band “Locust Ridge,” made up of several local and area musicians, including Jack and Marilyn Bain and Brandon Spencer. In addition, there will be individual music performances by local residents, including Travis Mullenix, Bob Gass, Gordy Hale, Dave Lamme, Salem Croy, Will Zang, Charlie Bacon, Julie McNabb and Lisa Zang Huffstutter. Admission is $5. Children five and under will be admitted free.
The music show will be preceded by the crowning of the 2012 NCM Fair Queen at 7 p.m. Candidates for queen include Loren Fox, Shelby Lowrey, Ronna Owens and Cassie Reid. The newly-crowned queen will be eligible to participate in the 2013 Missouri State Fair Queen competition.
Tuesday also marks the first day of livestock competition with the dog show set for 10 a.m. This year the show will be held at the Green Hills Animal Shelter. Check-in will be at 9 a.m.
Junior and senior division household arts and science entries will be taken at the Rock Barn from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, along with creative activities. Fine art entries will be taken from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the fine arts area, locating in the courtyard.
Wednesday’s schedule kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with the pee wee swine show, followed by the regular swine show. Chickens and rabbits will be judged at 9:30 a.m.
Wednesday’s grandstand entertainment will be the IAMO truck and tractor pull, which gets under way at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12 and free for children under 6.
Thursday will feature the Pee Wee goat show at 8:30 a.m., with the regular show to follow. The dairy show, including bucket calves, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The grandstand attraction on Thursday night is the Reuben Detweiler/Jesse James Graber Memorial Bullride at 8 p.m. This will be preceded by Muttin’ Bustin’ at 7 p.m. Registration for the muttin’ bustin’ will take place at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12 and free for children under 6.
The sheep show is scheduled for Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m. with the ladies lead and followed by the pee wee and regular shows.
In the grandstand will be ATV and motocross races, which get under way at 7 p.m. Registration starts at 4:30 p.m. with a charge of $10 per pass. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and under. Pit passes are $15.
The fair concludes on Saturday with the beef bucket calf show at 8:30 a.m., followed by the beef breeding and steer shows. The horse show gets under way at 9 a.m. at the North Missouri Saddle Club grounds.
Saturday night’s grandstand attraction will be the demolition derby, which gets under way at 7 p.m. Registration starts at 4 p.m. in the Trenton High School parking lot. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children under 6. Pit passes will be offered for $20, with no one under the age of 15 allowed in the pits.
“Kenny’s Funland” will have the carnival rides again this year. Armbands will be sold every night of the fair at a cost of $15.
