“I am seeking re-election to this position which I’ve held for the past eight years because law enforcement is my profession and lifelong career not just my current job. Being a long-term sheriff of Grundy County is still my goal, a goal that I set into action over 20 years ago when I enrolled in my first criminal justice course at North Central Missouri College. Ever since then I have taken every opportunity to improve myself, I have attended all the training I can, I have been a dedicated and loyal servant, I haven’t shunned responsibility and I’ve taken every opportunity to take on more. Being sheriff, especially in a small rural community, is a challenge; balancing policing, politics and business and I have repeatedly risen to that challenge and still find joy in wearing the badge. I’ve always considered myself more of a leader than a politician and although being sheriff is an elected position, to me it’s not about politics; It’s about serving the people I’ve sworn to protect and serve while managing and leading people to make things better where we live. And I know that with my training and experience, I have been and can continue to make a difference in Grundy County.
“I began my career in law enforcement in 1993 working as a police officer for the City of Holden while I completed my bachelor of science degree in criminal justice administration at Central Missouri State University (now University of Central Missouri) in Warrensburg. I was then later employed as a police officer for the City of Columbia until I relocated back to Grundy County in 1999 and was employed as a Grundy County Deputy Sheriff, working for Sheriff Greg Coon. Upon Sheriff Coon’s retirement, I was elected sheriff of Grundy County in 2004 and was then re-elected in 2008.
“I have over 18 years experience as a full-time employed peace officer. I have over 590 hours of certified peace officer academy training as well as an additional 1,577 hours of certified law enforcement training and over 500 hours of non-certified law enforcement training. I am a graduate of the National Sheriff’s Institute. I have been elected by my brother sheriffs to represent them on the Executive Board of the Missouri Sheriff’s Association. I have been appointed by the governor to a statewide 911 Advisory Board. I am and have been a DARE instructor for the past 12 years, at one time teaching DARE to both the county schools and Trenton R-9. I have been elected by my peers to serve as the chairman of the North Central Missouri Major Case Squad and the NITRO Drug Task Force. I am an executive board member of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety. I am a trained forensic child interviewer. I was awarded the 2004 Silver Valor Award by KQTV-2 and the Northwest Missouri Law Enforcement Awards for Valor Committee for my part in the capture of Daniel Porter.
“In my tenure as Grundy County Sheriff, I have overseen the construction of the new Grundy County Law Enforcement and Detention Center and am the most knowledgeable person as to its design and operation.
“I am 41 years old and I am a Grundy County native, having been raised in the Galt area, the son of Delores Stephens-Herring and the late Ron Herring. I graduated from Grundy R-5 High School in 1989. I graduated from North Central Missouri College in 1992 with an associate of arts degree and transferred to Central Missouri State University, where I graduated in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice administration.
“I reside in Trenton and I have three children, Brayden Herring, Haley Bell and Jeffory Bell. I am and have been a member of the Rural Dale Baptist Church for the past nine years. I have been active in the community serving on several local boards, supporting Special Olympics and involved in Scouting with my sons.”
