The Trenton Bulldogs leading tackler in 2011 will be on the gridiron again this fall – with the William Penn Statesmen.
Trenton High School graduate Fred Pannell signed a national letter of intent this morning in the THS commons becoming the newest member of the Statesmen football team.

“I like the campus up there and the coaches seem nice,” Pannell said of his decision to sign with William Penn. “They gave me an opportunity to go play somewhere and do what I like to do and that is play football.”
Pannell had a huge season for Trenton in 2011 at the linebacker position, leading the team in tackles with 119. Pannell also had a team-high 20 tackles for loss and recorded five sacks, two fumbles forced and two fumbles recovered.
“Fred has worked really hard over the course of his career to make himself a good football player,” Trenton Head Coach Wes Croy said. “It paid off for him last fall. He was a major force for us and our defense. He is so athletic and has so much ability and has a lot of growth in front of him. I think William Penn is getting a kid who hasn’t even come close to his full potential yet. The sky is the limit and it is a great opportunity for him.”
Pannell’s efforts were recognized by the media as he was selected to the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association All-Northwest District Football Team following the season. Pannell was the Trenton team Defensive Player of the Week twice during the season.
