Garnett shot a score of 131, nine under par on the course, to win the event and grab the first of two qualifying positions. Runner-up John Peterson of Ft. Worth, TX also qualified. Garnett, a Nationwide Tour player, will be making his first appearance in a PGA Tour sanctioned event when he battles the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickleson at the U.S. Open in San Francisco.
The USGA accepted over 9,000 entries and of those 9,000-plus entries 550 advanced to sectional tournaments like the one Garnett won. A total of 13 sectional tournaments were held with about half of the U.S. Open’s field of 156 being determined. The other half of the field is made up of professional golfers from various tours like the PGA, who are exempt from having to qualify.
