The Spickard R-2 Board of Education held a meeting on Monday, taking action on several items.
Spickard Board Meets On Monday
According to information provided by Superintendent Mike Garrett, members reviewed the preliminary budget for next school year, which will show a “break-even” or deficit, depending on state funding, and the addition of a paraprofessional for the kindergarten class. The budget will be reviewed and discussed further at the June meeting.
The board adopted changes to policies as suggested by MSBA and agreed to continue its contract with MSBA for next year. Garrett reported on attendance, which was 95.3 percent for May and 95.1 percent for the year. There was also discussion concerning the schedules and calendar, including the dates of meetings scheduled for Garrett along with updates on summer work. Ceiling tiles on the third floor are being replaced along with hallways being painted on all floors of the school building.
Options for next year concerning preschool-kindergarten were discussed with no action taken. Christy Calhoun will begin work in the maintenance department in July through the Green Hills summer help program and it was reported that a grant through Lowe’s for window replacement had been denied. An application to Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for a fresh fruits and vegetable grant was also denied.
Following an executive session for personnel and student matters, the board voted to offer contracts for part-time summer maintenance and a paraprofessional for next year. Those names will be announced once they have accepted the positions.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 18.
