Lady Pirates Draw Split Against Maple Woods

The North Central Missouri College Lady Pirates softball team was in action in Kansas City on Tuesday, facing off with Maple Woods in a doubleheader. The Lady Pirates picked up a win in game one, 10-3, but were denied the sweep, falling 8-3 in game two.

The Lady Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one and held the slim lead until the fifth inning, when Maple Woods got on the board and tied the game at one run apiece. The Lady Pirates answered in a big way in the top of the sixth, breaking through with four runs. NCMC wasn’t done, running up five more in the seventh. Maple Woods made a small rally in the bottom of the final inning, but scored just two runs before the Lady Pirates recorded the third out to seal the win.
Jessica Thompsen took the win in the circle for North Central, striking out 10 in the contest. She allowed five hits and one walk in the contest.
At the plate, Shelley Riley went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Jessica Cook had a double and an RBI and Kassidey Borland, Paige Edwards and Emily Anderson tallied a single and two RBIs each. Lindsey Derry drove in a run with a single.
In game two, NCMC fell behind 7-0 before finally scoring in the sixth inning. The Lady Pirates scored three runs, but that would be all they got in the game as Maple Woods avenged the game one loss with a five-run victory.
Cook took the loss striking out three in 3 1/3 innings allowing four hits and two walks. Edwards finished the game throwing the final 2 2/3 innings, striking out two while yielding three hits and three walks.
At the plate, the Lady Pirates got a hit and two RBIs from Bailey Wingard and Cook had two hits and the Lady Pirates’ other RBI. Borland had two hits and two stolen bases and Riley, Derry and Kelsey Hight added one hit each. Riley and Thompsen each stole a base as well.
With the split, the Lady Pirates moved to 11-22 on the season.
North Central will return to the diamond on Sunday, playing host to St. Charles Community College at Griffin Field in Trenton. Action begins at 1 p.m. with the first game of the scheduled doubleheader.
The Lady Pirates game against Highland Community College, scheduled for Thursday in Highland, KS, has been moved to Monday, April 16. The Lady Pirates will also play a make-up doubleheader with Crowder Community College on Wednesday, April 18. That doubleheader will be played at Griffin Field in Trenton and is set for a 2 p.m. start time.
