Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be at the school to talk about the need by teens to wear seat belts. According to THS FCCLA Advisor Connie Hoffman, THS teenage drivers had been identified with only 44 percent seat belt usage, which is less than the statewide teen average of 67 percent and the overall state average of 79 percent.
Two patrolmen, Cpl. Adam McAtee and Trooper Nicholas Greiner, will have a seat belt convincer and rollover simulator in the high school parking lot and other local troopers and police officers will also be assisting with the morning activities. The FCCLA chapter members will have a walking/texting obstacle course for students to complete to demonstrate the difficulty of performing common tasks while texting. Jacob Black will provide data about the cost of crashes and other unsafe driver behaviors that affect insurance costs while Jennifer Westcott of the Grundy County Health Department will provide prizes from the community and a banner for students to sign as they pledge to wear their seat belts. Steve Bramblett will also have an organized seat belt check to remind students to “buckle up.”
The event is being coordinated by Shannon P. Skoglund, senior highway designer for the northeast district of the Missouri Department of Transportation.
