City of Trenton voters re-elected four councilmen while the city of Spickard has a three-way tie for one of its board of aldermen positions following Tuesday’s election in Grundy County.
Light Voter Turnout In Tuesday Election
Voter turnout was light, with only 9 percent of eligible voters going to the polls. A total of 303 persons cast ballots from among 3,938 who were registered to vote in precincts where elections were held.
There was only one race in the four wards of Trenton, with incumbent second ward councilman Kenneth Ewing defeating Rickey Mason, 31-23. Ewing won regular voting, 25-22, and had the most absentee votes, 6-1. Re-elected without opposition were first ward councilman Jacob Black, 46 votes; third ward councilman Chuck Elliott, 52 votes; and fourth ward councilman Larry Huffstutter, 51 votes.
At Spickard, there were six candidates for two seats on the Board of Aldermen. Mary Howe had the most votes, 29, while three persons finished with 18 votes, Janice Vandevender, Mary Gibson and Rusty Soper. Ricky Crawford received 11 votes and Niki Gibson had 10 votes. County Clerk Betty Spickard said it will be up to the board to decide who will fill the other position.
At Laredo, Rebecca Burns received 14 votes to be elected as mayor. There were 23 write-in for Laredo alderman, with Charles Eckert and Jerry Stadler receiving the most votes.
At Galt, Russell Searcy was elected as north ward alderman with seven votes while Tom Loughy received six votes for south ward alderman.
Washington Township voters turned down a 35-cent road tax with five votes in favor and six opposed.
In area school board elections, Aaron Franklin and Phillip Rhoades were elected to the Princeton R-5 Board while Brent Turner and Paul Thomas were elected to the Chillicothe R-2 School Board. At Chula, Laura Warren and Steve Thomas earned the two school board seats and Mercer R-3 voters elected Kirk Ellis and Chris Main.
South Harrison voters turned down a bond issue for new school construction and improvements, with 626 voting in favor and 490 voting no. The issue needed four-sevenths approval.
The city of Bethany approved a bond issue for wastewater improvements, including construction of a new wastewater facility. The issue was approved on a 523-96 vote. Harrison County voters approved renewal of its sales tax by a 1,344 to 253 vote.
At Jamesport, Rob Murphy was elected north ward councilman while Fred Garner won the south ward position. At Princeton, Kurt Meighen was elected as mayor while Mike Greenlee was chosen as north ward alderman and George Scurlock was elected in the south ward.
Elected mayor at Gilman City was Meri Ann Troyer while Wendy Andersen and Jack Prindle were elected to the board of aldermen. At Chula, John Graves was elected mayor. Aldermen elected were Patrick Carleton, south ward, and Benny Simpson, north ward.
