Thomas Anthony, M.D., a 52-year-old resident of Boise, ID and former Dallas, TX resident, died as a result of an automobile accident on Saturday, March 24, 2012.

Born Oct. 18, 1959 to James and Wilma Stadelmann Anthony in Port Jefferson, NY, Dr. Anthony graduated from Centereach High School and earned his bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He graduated with honors from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, completed general surgery residency at the University of Washington, a surgical oncology fellowship at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY, and a master of science degree in epidemiology at the Harvard University School of Public Health.
Dr. Anthony was recently appointed chief of surgery at the Boise VA Hospital. Previously, he had served as vice chairman and professor of surgery in the division of surgical oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine and chief of surgical service at the Veterans’ Administration North Texas Health Care System. His area of specialization was gastrointestinal oncology and his research was published in numerous professional journals. A respected teacher and mentor, he was honored to receive the Laycock-Snyder Award for Outstanding Achievement in Resident Teaching at UT Southwestern Medical School multiple times. At the time of his death he was president of the national council of VA surgical chiefs, and chairman of the VA’s General Surgery Advisory Board. He trained a generation of surgeons, many of whom became close friends and fishing partners.
In his personal life, Dr. Anthony was most proud to have received the Father of the Year award from the Lake Highlands Family YMCA. An avid angler, he especially loved the rivers of Alaska and Idaho. He was a catch-and-release fisherman using flies that he tied himself. Also a disciplined runner, he completed marathons in Dallas, New York, Boston and St. George, Utah.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Connie Carpenter Anthony and daughters Carly and Andie, all of Dallas; his father, James F. Anthony of Seneca, SC; four brothers and their families James P. Anthony, M.D. of San Francisco, CA, William Anthony, M.D., of Mount Laurel, NJ, David Anthony, M.D., of North Hollywood, CA and Paul Anthony of Allentown, NJ; his father- and mother-in-law, Carl and Gloria Carpenter of Trenton; and a brother-in-law, Craig Carpenter and his family of Alpharetta, GA.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Anthony.
