The Trenton High School golf team opened its 2012 campaign Tuesday afternoon at the Riverside Country Club, hosting Marceline. Trenton put its best foot forward in the opening dual of the season taming the Marceline Tigers with a team score of 149. Marceline combined for a 170.
THS Golfers Tee Off On Marceline
The Trenton golfers scorched the course at the RCC as three players shot a score of 37, just three over par. Chase Tolson, Lane Beverlin and Austin Norris, technically listed as the Bulldogs’ three, four and five golfers, tied for medalist honors at the dual with Marceline’s Tim Jordan, who also shot a 37.
Lane Beverlin arrived at his score of 37, parring all but two holes on the nine-hole layout. Beverlin closed strong, parring the final five holes he played. Tolson tallied four pars and a birdie and Norris finished with four pars and a birdie as well.
Just behind the trio was Joey Christenson, who finished one stroke off the lead with a 38. Christenson parred five holes on the day and tallied a birdie on the fifth hole.
Blake Schlarb, Trenton’s number-one golfer finished with a 41, but had his moments on the course as well. Schlarb picked up pars on three holes.
“The boys played great,” Bulldogs’ Coach Travis Mullenix said. “I was very happy with the way they came out and defended their home course. Blake has been playing well leading up to today, but just had one of those days. He’ll be fine. The rest of the varsity squad really impressed me. Tolson, Bev, Norris and Joe all had great days on the course. They’ve been playing a lot and getting better and today it all came together. A team score of 149 is very good.”
With the win, the Trenton varsity established a 1-0 record to start the season.
Also in action and also winning was the Trenton junior varsity. The JV Bulldogs scored a 187 to top the Marceline junior varsity’s mark of 210.
Leading the way for the Trenton JV was Brad Ewald, who put up a varsity-like score of 38. Ewald finished his round with a JV-high five pars. Cade Mullenix came around with a 47, parring two holes, and Jak Klinginsmith carded a 50 with one par. Chris Kurtz rounded out the JV Bulldogs’ team score with a 52 and Klark Critten was also in action, shooting a 58 and parring one hole.
“The JV squad also played well,” Mullenix said. “Ewald is fighting for that five spot on the varsity and carded a solid 38. There is no lack of competition for varsity this year and that should help us to stay motivated and get better each week. I thought the rest of the JV team did real well. We had three freshmen that fought off the butterflies and scored well for their first high school match. Kurtz just had a couple of tough holes or he would have been under 50. I was also happy to see Jake shoot his best score of the year at our first match.”
The Trenton golfers will be back on the links this afternoon as they travel to St. Joseph to battle the LeBlond Golden Eagles on the Fairview Golf Course. Tee time for the dual is set for 4 p.m.
