R-6, Tri-County and Newtown Boards Offer Contracts

Contracts for the 2012-2013 school year were offered during recent meetings of the Pleasant View R-6, Tri-County R-7 and Newtown-Harris boards of education.

Pleasant View R-6
All non-tenured staff were rehired during the Pleasant View R-6 meeting, held Tuesday evening.
According to information provided by Superintendent Tiffany Otto, the board held an executive session, after which all non-tenured staff had contracts renewed for the 2012-2013 school year. Salaries will be determined at a later date, when more budget information is available.
Also following the executive session, the board accepted the resignation of Special Education and Speech Implementor Penny Kimber-ling.
A personnel concern was discussed during the session, with no action taken.
Board members heard an update on kindergarten round-up and a recent preschool evaluation that was performed by the Early Childhood Special Education teachers. Board members also reviewed the March MSBA board report, reviewed MSBA policy updates and approved program evaluations for ECSE classrooms, the health program, kindergarten through seventh grade and Title I. Mrs. Otto was approved as the Homeless Coordinator for the district and Carrie Rogers was approved as the track coach for the 2011-2012 season.
In her report, Mrs. Otto updated the board on Special Education and Federal Programs Desk Monitoring, discussing the paperwork that has been filed with DESE in regard to monitoring for those programs that must be completed every three years. It was noted that the Grundy County Health Department will administer the employee health fair on March 22, with the board paying for three tests for each employee and the employee paying for any additional tests. She said scoliosis screening will be performed by Dr. Alissa Wiggins on March 26 for students in fifth through seventh grades. Board members learned that the food service inspection took place on March 2 and that $47.50 has been received from Citizens Bank and Trust from the Blue Jay debit card.
Several upcoming events were discussed, including no school on Friday, April 6 and Monday, April 9 and the mid-term for the fourth quarter, which is April 11.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for April 10.
Tri-County
Contracts were offered to certified staff members at Tri-County during a meeting held Tuesday at which a co-op agreement for sports was also discussed.
According to Superinten-dent Phil Fox, the board offered contracts to all present certified staff members for the 2012-2013 school year and hired Brittney Hixson to teach seventh grade for the 2012-2013 school year. Rhonda Sweet was offered a contract for Title I math and reading for next year and the resignation of Ann Eckert, district bookkeeper, was accepted, effective at the end of the fiscal year.
In addition, board member Stephanie Eckert resigned from the board, citing personal reasons.
The board discussed the results of an athletic survey sent to parents of students in grades seven through 11 regarding the possibility of developing a co-op agreement with a neighboring district for certain sports teams next year. After much discussion, the administration was directed to proceed with investigating the details of such an agreement.
On the recommendation of the Insurance Committee, the board voted to withdraw membership and insurance coverage from the MRP Insurance Consortium. The committee recommended that the board purchase health insurance from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. The base coverage to be offered by the district will be for $325 per employee, with a buy-up option of $389 per employee. The board voted to purchase the BCBS insurance coverage for the 2012-2013 school year.
The board heard a transportation report regarding recent repairs to the district’s buses and on preparations for the state bus inspection on March 22. In addition, the board was informed that the district is on the list for approval to become an A-Plus School. The State Board of Education must approve the application and then the 2012 graduates of Tri-County will be able to take advantage of the program.
In other business, the board heard the second reading of MSBA policy updates, with no action taken, and accepted the only bid received for a used 500-gallon propane tank that was identified as surplus by the district. The $75 bid was from Alvin Schwartz of Jamesport. Board members also approved a request from the After Prom parent group to pay for the insurance for the after prom party and appointed Greg Landes to the Salary Committee.
An executive session was held, after which the announcements concerning personnel were made.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 10.
Newtown-Harris
Board members at Newtown-Harris voted Monday to offer contracts to all current faculty for the 2012-2013 school year, according to Superintendent Dr. Bryan Copple.
In addition, the board accepted the resignation of Kathy Hullinger as ELL aide for next year. She has agreed to help in the substitute teaching area.
Board members approved the 2012-2013 salary schedule and several FFA trips for March and April and recognized Titus and Tegan Bell and Hayden Veach as students of the month.
It was announced that there will be two hours of school bus training for drivers from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Monday and that the HDC Spring Meeting is scheduled for March 29 at North Harrison. It was noted that Dr. Copple will be attending the MASA Conference at the Lake of the Ozarks March 21-23.
It was announced that Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, with classes to be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Copple will begin serving food at 4:30 p.m. No classes will be held on Friday, March 16 or Friday, March 23.
Board members approved a change in the meeting dates for the April and May board meetings. The April meeting will be held April 10, with the May meeting set for May 7.
