The Pirates found themselves in trouble early as Marshalltown ran out to a 9-0 lead right off the bat. The lead would swell to 13 points before the Pirates switched from a man-to-man to zone defense. Behind the zone, the Pirates reeled Marshalltown back in, tying the game 39-39 just before the half. Marshalltown would get the final points of the half and led NCMC 41-39 at the break.
In the second half, Marshalltown adjusted to the zone defense and began to pull away, taking the game by 25 points.
“We couldn’t handle them inside,” Pirates’ Head Coach Steve Richman said. “I thought our guards were as good as theirs, but we just didn’t match up with them inside. They were too big and too physical.”
Tim Nelson led the Pirates with 16 points and seven assists and Derreon Parker added 14 points.
The North Central men fell to 17-7 on the season with the loss.
There won’t be much time for the Pirates to stew over the loss as they hit the floor again tonight, hosting the Central College junior varsity at the KCC in Trenton.
Action tips off at 7 o’clock.
