Once again the Lady Bulldogs suffered a slow start and Putnam County made the most of their opportunity, running out to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter.
“Our trend of poor starts continued against Putnam County,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Quentin Albrecht said. “We took the first five shots of the game, all in the lane, and the first two free throws of the game and managed to miss all of those shots. Putnam got on a little roll and jumped out to a 9-0 run before we called time out to kind of right the ship a little bit. Even then, we continued to miss basket after basket.”
Trenton scored just 12 points in the first half and trailed by 14 points at the break. The Lady Bulldogs’ offense did get rolling in the second half, but the damage was already done and the deficit was too much to overcome as Trenton fell by 11 points.
“We did come out in the second half and try to battle back and I am proud of the girls for that,” Albrecht said. “The hole we had dug was just too deep.”
The Lady Bulldogs, now 10-6 on the season, were led by Avery Whitaker and Halie Brewer, who had 13 and 11 points respectively. Cassidy Cotton added six, Scotlin Hurley had four, Madi Trump finished with three, Makaila Capeder had two and Megan Sole scored one.
Trenton returns to action tonight, playing for third place against Lathrop at 7:30 p.m.
