Longtime Harris resident Max C. Fairley, 88, died at 6:23 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 at the Sullivan County Memorial Hospital in Milan, where he had been a patient for two days.

The body was cremated and no services are planned. The Payne Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Fairley was born on July 7, 1923 at Harris, the son of Homer and Buna McClasky Fairley. He graduated from Harris High School. He served in the United States Army during WWII. Tech 5 Fairley was in the first wave that invaded Utah Beach on D-Day on June 6, 1944. He was also engaged in battles at the Rhineland, Central Europe, Normandy and Northern France.
After his discharge he returned to Harris where he married Kathleen Jaynes. She preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 1986. They farmed and lived in the Wintersville community east of Harris all their married lives.
He is survived by one son, Claget Fairley of the home.
