The dual opened at 106, where Carlos Gonzalez got the Bulldogs on the board with a win by fall. Marceline was able to tie the score at 113, where Trenton was open, but the Bulldogs regained the lead with a win by a 4-2 decision from Brandon Dolan at 120.
“Dolan’s match was a big match,” Trenton head Coach Bill Hill said. “Both of those guys have been state qualifiers before. He had beaten Dolan earlier in the year, but we got him this time, 4-2, on a takedown with less than 10 seconds left. It was a real smart match by Brandon and he has been winning a lot of close ones lately because he has been wrestling smart.”
After Dolan came out on top of a great match, Lane Beverlin wound up on the other end, losing by a 2-1 decision at 126.
“Beverlin wrestled Bell and he is a real good wrestler who medaled at state last year,” Hill said. “We were really in that match. Lane gave him all he wanted. We had a couple of opportunities where we thought we were going to score and didn’t get it, so we are looking forward to next time. Lane will see him again at the Brookfield Tournament.”
With the match tied at 9-9, Marceline took their first lead of the dual when Kody Westcott lost by fall at 132. That would be the only time Marceline would lead, however. Karson Hill tied the dual again, this time at 15-15 by scoring a win by fall after 15 takedowns at 138. Mason Mounce followed with a quick win by fall at 145 and Thomas Mack scored a major decision win at 152, 9-0.
“Thomas Mack wrestled a really good match,” Hill said. “He was in control and stayed in good position the whole match. He has really been improving.”
After Mack’s match, Trenton won the next three weights by forfeit to seal the dual victory. Clay Oneal (160), Jacob Spillman (170) and Dakota Galvin (182) all won by forfeit. Tyler Carpenter wrestled the last match competed on the mat of the dual, falling by a 6-1 decision at 195. Both schools were open at 220 and Layton Harkins scored a win by forfeit at 285.
With the win, Trenton improved to 8-2 in duals this season.
The wrestlers will be back on the mat on Tuesday traveling to Brookfield for triangular action and the Bulldogs travel to Brookfield again on Saturday, Jan. 21 for the Brookfield Tournament. Action begins at 5 p.m. for Tuesday’s triangular and 9:30 a.m. for the tournament.
